Georgetown University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Georgetown undergraduate admissions asks applicants with credentials in another language for English translations of their original transcripts, sent with the originals, and says your high school may do the translation without requiring it. Georgetown University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. The Graduate School names a professional translator or translation company as acceptable and rules out friends and family; the WES or NACES evaluation some graduate programs want is separate, and we do not provide it.

Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. Georgetown's Graduate School accepts a translation by "a professional translator / translation company" (application information), and undergraduate admissions asks for English translations without limiting who makes them (international applicants), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets both. What the Graduate School wants the certification to say

Georgetown's Graduate School is unusually precise. For transcripts not in English, it first asks for an English version issued by your institution; only if the institution does not provide one do you supply a certified or notarized translation with a copy of the original (application information). The translation must come from the institution or a professional translator or translation company, and translations by friends or family members are not accepted.

The signed certification has to cover the translator's name, signature and date, the completeness and accuracy of the translation, the country and language of origin, and the translator's qualifications. Our translations come with a signed certificate of accuracy on letterhead; eVerbary is an ATA corporate member (#273062). Check the certificate against Georgetown's list before you upload it with the original-language transcript.

Transcripts uploaded with the application count as unofficial. Georgetown asks you not to send official transcripts until you have an offer, and it can withdraw an offer if the final official transcript does not match the one you uploaded (source).

Undergraduate: four years, translated, with the originals

Undergraduate applicants send credentials from their entire secondary school experience, normally four years, and translations must be accompanied by the original documents (source). Georgetown's page says translation may be done by your high school; that is an option, not a requirement. International transfer applicants are welcome from two-year, four-year and international institutions (transfer applicants), and the Bulletin asks international students for translated, official transcripts of all secondary and university credentials (source).

Where Georgetown's pages differ

The McCourt School of Public Policy's international applicants page first says a third-party evaluation of international transcripts is not required but strongly recommended, and further down says applicants who studied outside the U.S. are required to submit evaluated transcripts. We have not resolved that difference; ask McCourt admissions before you apply. Its translation rule matches the Graduate School's: an English version from the institution, or a certified or notarized translation.

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to Georgetown

Undergraduate applicants send the translation with the original transcript; exam results such as A-Levels or IB come directly from the school (source).

Graduate applicants upload the original-language transcript, the translation and the signed certification to the application, or a WES or NACES evaluation with the transcripts as one document (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Georgetown that means we translate and certify your transcripts and diplomas; a WES ICAP or other NACES evaluation, where a graduate program requires one, comes from the agency.

Frequently asked questions

Can my high school translate my transcripts for Georgetown?

It may, but it does not have to. Georgetown asks for English translations accompanied by the originals (source); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary also qualifies.

Can a friend translate my documents for a graduate application?

No. The Graduate School accepts translations from the institution or a professional translator or translation company, not from friends or family (source).

What must the graduate translation certificate include?

Translator name, signature and date; completeness and accuracy; origin country and language; and the translator's qualifications (source).

Do I need a WES evaluation for Georgetown graduate programs?

It is strongly encouraged and required by some programs; check your program's requirements (source).

Should I mail official transcripts with my graduate application?

No. Upload copies; official final transcripts are requested only after an offer of admission (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
