How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

The West Virginia Board of Medicine asks physicians to submit a true copy of the medical school diploma with a certified, official English-language translation if it is in another language, and does not say who must make it.

West Virginia BOM accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

Transcripts are different: the school mails them with its verification form, with an original, certified English translation if they are not in English, so we can translate them but cannot send them for your school.

West Virginia BOM at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

The physician instructions ask for a certified, official English-language translation of a diploma issued in another language, without naming who must translate (physician instructions), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Worth knowing about West Virginia BOM

Diploma with translation

A true copy plus a certified, official English translation.

Transcripts from the dean

Mailed by the school with Form #2 and its translation.

ECFMG or five years

An exception for long-licensed physicians elsewhere.

West Virginia BOM requirements in detail

Translation

A certified, official English-language translation of the diploma if issued in another language (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

Who may translate

Not stated by the Board (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025). ECFMG, which most international graduates need, accepts a professional translation service and bars self-translation (ECFMG: English translations).

Transcripts

If you do not use FCVS, the dean mails the school-sealed diploma copy, the official transcript and Form #2; an original, certified and official English translation is required if transcripts are not in English (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

Evaluation

International graduates need a valid ECFMG certificate or an exception (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

ECFMG exception

Five years of full-time practice under a full, unrestricted license in another state, Puerto Rico, DC or Canada, with no discipline (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

FCVS

Optional for identity, education, testing and training; FCVS does not verify international residency programs (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

Deadline

Applications not completed within six months expire (Medical doctor applications).

Diploma from you, transcripts from the school

West Virginia splits the education file. You submit a true and complete copy of your diploma with a certified, official English-language translation (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

Your medical school verifies your education on the Board's form, and, when you do not use FCVS, the dean mails the sealed diploma copy, an official transcript and the form; if the transcripts are not in English, the school must include an original, certified and official translation (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

If your school does not translate, you can order the transcript translation from us and give it to the school to enclose with its mailing; we cannot mail it to the Board on the school's behalf.

Training rules for international graduates

International graduates need two years of ACGME-approved training; or one year of ACGME training or US fellowship plus ABMS certification; or a residency outside the US followed by at least two years of related US fellowship training (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

FCVS does not verify international residency, so certificates from abroad may need to come from the program, with translations of any not in English.

The Board's rule on ECFMG certificates for international graduates is in 11CSR1A (11CSR1A, licensing and disciplinary procedures).

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
  • Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.

For West Virginia that means we translate your diploma and records; we cannot mail transcripts for your school, and we do not order ECFMG or FCVS verifications.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does West Virginia require a translation of my medical diploma?

Yes, a certified, official English-language translation if the diploma is in another language (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

Who can translate it?

The Board does not say. A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets the requirement; ECFMG does not accept translations made by applicants (ECFMG: English translations).

Can I send my transcripts myself?

No. The dean mails them with Form #2, with a certified translation if they are not in English, unless you use FCVS (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

Do I need ECFMG certification?

Yes as an international graduate, unless you have five years of full-time practice under a full license in another state or Canada without discipline (Physician application instructions and checklist, revised July 2025).

How long does my application stay open?

Six months; incomplete applications then expire (Medical doctor applications).
