How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners says on its license checklists that all documents must be translated into English and that the translation must be certified; it does not say who must make it.

Tennessee BME accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

Transcripts, ECFMG reports and exam scores reach the Board from the source or through FCVS, so the translation covers the documents you submit yourself; we do not verify credentials.

Tennessee BME at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

The Board's checklists for the foreign training, graduate physician and single purpose licenses require all documents in English with a certified translation, without naming the translator (foreign training license checklist), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Tennessee BME requirements in detail

Translation

All documents must be translated into English, and the translation must be certified (foreign training, graduate physician, single purpose).

Who may translate

Not stated. A certified translation from a professional service meets the wording.

Full license

The full licensure checklist says documentation must be submitted in English and that transcripts come from the school or through FCVS, never from the applicant (Medical Doctor Full Licensure checklist and forms).

ECFMG

International graduates applying for a full license send a notarized copy of the permanent ECFMG certificate, an ECFMG letter for Mexican graduates, or USMLE Step 1 and 2 results sent by the testing agency (Medical Doctor Full Licensure checklist and forms).

FCVS

For the foreign training license, an FCVS profile; any medical school transcript, ECFMG status report or USMLE transcript missing from it goes to the Board directly from the source (Foreign Training License checklist and forms).

Notarization

The Declaration of Citizenship and, for the foreign training license, the applicant attestation must be notarized; the checklists do not ask for a notarized translation (Foreign Training License checklist and forms).

How to apply

Online at lars.tn.gov or by mailing application pages 1 to 6 (Foreign Training License checklist and forms).

Which documents you translate, and which arrive from the source

Tennessee's rule is broad: all documents in English, translation certified (Foreign Training License checklist and forms). In practice the core credentials do not come from you.

Medical school transcripts arrive from the school or through FCVS, and the Board does not accept ones sent by the applicant (Medical Doctor Full Licensure checklist and forms); ECFMG reports and exam transcripts come from those bodies (Foreign Training License checklist and forms).

What you send yourself are the proof of citizenship or lawful presence (a birth certificate, passport or naturalization certificate for US citizens), name-change records and, for the foreign training license, documents about your training and license abroad (Foreign Training License checklist and forms). Those are the documents the certified translation is for.

The foreign training license

Tennessee offers a foreign training license to physicians trained outside the US who hold an offer of employment from a Tennessee provider.

Its checklist adds an employment offer form, a notarized applicant attestation, verification of postgraduate training and of employment over the last three years, and a $1,015 fee (Foreign Training License checklist and forms).

Training and employment verifications are completed by the institutions and returned to the Board by them. If an institution abroad issues its letter in another language, ask it to send the original as instructed and keep a certified translation ready for the Board.

Where the Board's checklists differ

The graduate physician, foreign training and single purpose checklists all say translations must be certified (Graduate Physician License checklist and forms).

The full licensure checklist says only that documentation must be in English (Medical Doctor Full Licensure checklist and forms). A certified translation satisfies both.

ECFMG, whose certificate full-license IMGs present, accepts a professional translation service and bars self-translation (ECFMG: English translations).

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
  • Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.

Submitting the translation to Tennessee BME

  • Upload the translation with the original in your LARS application, or mail it with application pages 1 to 6, following the checklist for your license type (Foreign Training License checklist and forms).

  • Transcripts, ECFMG reports and exam scores must reach the Board from the source or through FCVS; a translation you send does not replace them.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.

For Tennessee that means we translate the documents you submit; we do not request your FCVS profile, ECFMG report or school transcript.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Tennessee Board accept a translation from a translation company?

Its checklists require a certified English translation of all documents and do not name who must make it (Foreign Training License checklist and forms). A certified translation from a professional service meets that.

Does the translation have to be notarized?

The checklists say "certified", not notarized. Notarization applies to forms such as the Declaration of Citizenship (Foreign Training License checklist and forms). If you want it, notarization is $34.90 per order.

Can I send my own transcript with a translation?

No. Transcripts must come from the school or through FCVS; transcripts sent by the applicant are not accepted (Medical Doctor Full Licensure checklist and forms).

What do international graduates send for ECFMG?

For the full license, a notarized copy of the permanent ECFMG certificate, or the alternatives the checklist lists (Medical Doctor Full Licensure checklist and forms). For the foreign training license, the ECFMG status report comes through FCVS or directly from ECFMG (Foreign Training License checklist and forms).

Can I translate my own documents?

The Board does not say, but ECFMG does not accept translations made by applicants (ECFMG: English translations); a certified translation by someone else avoids the question.
