How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026
The South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners publishes no translation rule for physician applicants: graduates of medical schools outside the United States or Canada need a permanent ECFMG Standard Certificate, three years of progressive US or Canadian residency (or one year plus specialty board certification) and an FCVS profile.
ECFMG, whose certificate South Carolina requires, accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary and bars applicants from translating their own documents.
We translate your diploma and other records for ECFMG; we do not issue the certificate, build the FCVS profile or send records for your school.
South Carolina BME at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
South Carolina requires foreign graduates to "possess a permanent Standard Certificate" from ECFMG (application requirements), and ECFMG accepts a translation prepared by "a professional translation service" (ECFMG translation rules), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets the rule that applies. South Carolina BME requirements in detail
Translation
No rule in the Board's application requirements (Requirements for a license to practice medicine). The rule that applies is ECFMG's: documents not in English need an English translation that meets its requirements, uploaded with the original (ECFMG).
Who may translate
For ECFMG: a professional translation service, a medical school official or a government official; not the applicant (ECFMG: English translations).
Foreign graduates
A permanent ECFMG Standard Certificate; the Board may waive it for a full-time faculty appointment of assistant professor or higher at a South Carolina medical school (Requirements for a license to practice medicine, S.C. Code 40-47).
Postgraduate training
At least three years of progressive residency approved by ACGME or AOA, or by the Royal College in Canada; or one year plus certification by an ABMS or AOA specialty board (Requirements for a license to practice medicine).
Credentials verification
An FCVS profile and an AMA or AOA Physician Profile; transcripts missing from FCVS must come to the Board from the school (Requirements for a license to practice medicine).
Legal name
Verified by a vital statistics birth certificate, passport or driver's license; a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order for a name change (Requirements for a license to practice medicine).
How to apply
Online, with a $500 fee; the application is good for one year (physician applications, Requirements for a license to practice medicine).
Why the translation happens at ECFMG
South Carolina verifies identity, education, training and exams through FCVS and an AMA or AOA profile, and treats the ECFMG certificate as the educational credential of a foreign graduate (Requirements for a license to practice medicine).
The Board does not ask you to submit translated school records itself; if FCVS lacks a transcript, the school sends it.
The point where you supply a translation is ECFMG, which wants the original-language document and a word-for-word translation uploaded together (ECFMG Information Booklet: English translation).
ECFMG's translation must be signed, on letterhead that identifies a private company as a translation service, with a statement in English that it is correct, and made from the original or a photocopy rather than a transcription (ECFMG: English translations).
Name documents the Board reads itself
One place where your own documents reach the Board is the legal name check: the license is issued in the name shown on a birth certificate or other legal document, and a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order shows a change (Requirements for a license to practice medicine).
The Board's requirements do not say how to handle one in another language; if yours is not in English, ask the Board at medboard@llr.sc.gov whether to include a certified translation.

What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
- Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.
Submitting the translation to South Carolina BME
For ECFMG, upload the PDF of the certified translation together with the original-language document through ECFMG's online services (ECFMG: English translations).
South Carolina receives your credentials through FCVS and the AMA or AOA profile, sent by those services by email to Medboard@llr.sc.gov or by mail (Requirements for a license to practice medicine).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.
For South Carolina that means we translate your documents; ECFMG certification, the FCVS and AMA or AOA profiles, the background check and any SPEX exam are separate steps you arrange.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
