How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026
The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice asks every physician applicant for a copy of the medical school diploma "and translation if necessary", and does not say who must make the translation.
Minnesota BMP accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.
International graduates also need ECFMG certification, which the Board receives directly from ECFMG, and medical school verification from the school or through FCVS; we translate, we do not verify.
Minnesota BMP at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
The physician application asks for a copy of the diploma with a translation if necessary, without naming who must translate (physician application instructions), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Policy checked on October 21, 2026.

Worth knowing about Minnesota BMP

One 8½ x 11 copy of the diploma, translated if not in English.

A pathway for internationally trained physicians under Minn. Stat. 147.037.
Minnesota BMP requirements in detail
Translation
A copy of the medical school diploma, with a translation if it is not in English (Physician application packet and instructions).
Who may translate
Not stated by the Board (Physician application packet and instructions). ECFMG, which Minnesota requires, accepts a professional translation service and bars self-translation (ECFMG: English translations).
Original or copy
An 8½ x 11 copy of the diploma; documents provided by FCVS are also accepted (Physician application packet and instructions).
Name
The name on the application and on the diploma must be the same; otherwise send a copy of the name-change record, such as a marriage certificate (Physician application packet and instructions).
Evaluation
No credential evaluation. International graduates need an ECFMG certificate, and ECFMG sends its confirmation directly to the Board (Physician application packet and instructions).
Medical school verification
Each school completes the Medical School Verification form and sends it to the Board directly, unless you use FCVS (Physician application packet and instructions).
Internationally trained physicians
The ITP limited license pathway asks for the same diploma copy and translation, plus employer and collaborative agreement attestations ($616 fee) (Internationally Trained Physician limited license instructions).
What you send and what the Board receives directly
Minnesota splits the file in two.
You send the application, the notarized affidavit with photo, an ID copy, the diploma copy with its translation, and name-change records; schools, training programs, ECFMG and exam bodies send their verifications straight to the Board (Physician application packet and instructions).
The translation therefore travels with the diploma copy you submit, not with the school's verification.
If you use FCVS, the Board accepts the diploma copy FCVS provides and you can disregard the medical school and postgraduate verification forms (Physician application packet and instructions).
The diploma name and the translation
The Board asks that the name on your application match the name on your diploma (Physician application packet and instructions).
A translation spells your name exactly as the diploma prints it, including both surnames where the original carries them, so a difference becomes visible early.
If you have married or changed your name since graduating, translate the marriage certificate or court order as well and send it with the application.
The ITP limited license
Minnesota also offers an Internationally Trained Physician limited license under Minn. Stat. 147.037, with its own packet, fee and attestations (Internationally Trained Physician limited license instructions).
Its diploma requirement is word for word the same as the full license: a copy, and a translation if necessary. Both packets are on the Board's forms page.
Need a certified translation for Minnesota BMP?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Medical school diploma
- Marriage certificate or court order for a name change
- Foreign medical license, for the ITP limited license
- Medical school transcripts and other records, if the Board asks for them during review
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
- Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.
Submitting the translation to Minnesota BMP
Send the diploma copy and its translation with your application packet to the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, following the application instructions.
Verifications from your school, ECFMG and exam bodies go to the Board directly from them; the translation does not replace them.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.
For Minnesota that means we translate your diploma and name-change records; we do not request your ECFMG verification, FCVS profile or school verification form.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Minnesota Board need a certified translation of my diploma?
Its instructions ask for the diploma copy "and translation if necessary" without naming a format (Physician application packet and instructions). A certified translation from a professional service covers it.
Can I translate my own diploma?
Minnesota's packet does not say, but ECFMG, which it requires, does not accept translations made by applicants (ECFMG: English translations).
Do I need FCVS?
No, it is optional in Minnesota. If you use it, the Board accepts the documents FCVS provides (Physician application packet and instructions).
How does ECFMG certification reach the Board?
You request ECFMG verification online and ECFMG sends the confirmation directly to the Board (Physician application packet and instructions).
Is the translation rule different for the ITP limited license?
No. The ITP instructions ask for the same diploma copy and translation if necessary (Internationally Trained Physician limited license instructions).
