How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation asks that physician documents in a foreign language come with an original, notarized translation made by a person other than the applicant who is fluent in English and the document's language, and who certifies those points and the accuracy of the translation.
IDFPR accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary, with notarization added ($34.90 per order).
Applicants for the newer IMG limited license send their medical credentials to ECFMG's MyIntealth portal instead, which has its own translation rule.
IDFPR at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
IDFPR's physician instructions accept a notarized translation by any fluent translator other than the applicant who certifies its accuracy (physician licensure instructions), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary, notarized, meets it. IDFPR requirements in detail
Translation
IDFPR's physician licensure instructions (packet DPR-MD-T, revised February 2025) say every document in a foreign language must come with an original, notarized translation (Physician and surgeon temporary licensure instruction packet, DPR-MD-T (IDFPR PDF)).
Who may translate
A person other than the applicant who is fluent in English and in the language of the document (Physician and surgeon temporary licensure instruction packet, DPR-MD-T (IDFPR PDF)).
Translator's certification
The translator certifies those requirements and the accuracy of the translation (Physician and surgeon temporary licensure instruction packet, DPR-MD-T (IDFPR PDF)).
Notarization
Required by the same instruction. eVerbary adds notarization at checkout for $34.90 per order.
Original or copy
IDFPR accepts copies of foreign education documents such as transcripts and diplomas by email to FPR.MedicalUnit@Illinois.gov and asks you not to mail originals (Physicians).
IMG Physician Limited License
Transcript, diploma, ECFMG certification, foreign training and good standing are uploaded to ECFMG's MyIntealth portal for verification; USMLE scores come through FSMB (International Medical Graduate Physician Limited License: applicant guide, FAQ).
How to apply
Physician applications are filed online in CORE, IDFPR's licensing system (Physicians).
Notarized, and certified by the translator
IDFPR's physician instructions set three conditions on a translation: it is an original, notarized translation; it is made by someone other than the applicant who is fluent in English and in the language of the document; and the translator certifies both points and the accuracy of the translation (Physician and surgeon temporary licensure instruction packet, DPR-MD-T (IDFPR PDF)).
The rule does not ask for a particular credential, so a professional translator qualifies.
That wording is printed in the instruction packet for temporary, limited temporary and transferred physician licenses, still linked from IDFPR's physicians page (Physician and surgeon temporary licensure instruction packet, DPR-MD-T (IDFPR PDF)).
Full licenses are now applied for in CORE, whose document list is shown only inside the application, so confirm there that the same rule applies to your license type.
When you order for IDFPR, choose notarization at checkout and write in the notes that the translation is for the Illinois physician license. Check that the signed certificate covers accuracy and the translator's fluency in both languages before you submit it.
Copies by email, not originals by mail
To make sure foreign education documents arrive, IDFPR's physicians page says it accepts copies of your official documents, such as medical transcripts and diplomas, sent to FPR.MedicalUnit@Illinois.gov, and asks you not to mail your original education documents (Physicians). Send the translation with the copy of the document it belongs to.
The IMG limited license goes through ECFMG
Since 2025 Illinois offers an International Medical Graduate Physician Limited License, tied to a sponsoring entity.
Applicants upload the medical school transcript and diploma, proof of ECFMG certification, foreign postgraduate training and a certificate of good standing to ECFMG's MyIntealth portal before applying to IDFPR (applicant guide, IMG FAQ).
For that track the translation rule that applies is ECFMG's: word for word, by a professional translation service or an official, never by the applicant, uploaded with the original-language document (ECFMG translation requirements).
Need a certified translation for IDFPR?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Medical school diploma and transcripts
- Certificate of good standing from a foreign medical council
- Foreign postgraduate training certificates
- Marriage certificate or court order, if your name has changed
- Employment letters verifying practice abroad, for the IMG limited license
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
- Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.
Submitting the translation to IDFPR
Email the notarized translation with the copy of the foreign education document to FPR.MedicalUnit@Illinois.gov, as IDFPR's physicians page describes, and keep the original; file the application itself in CORE (Physicians).
For the IMG Physician Limited License, upload the translation with the original-language document to MyIntealth, following ECFMG's instructions (International Medical Graduate Physician Limited License: applicant guide, ECFMG).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.
For Illinois that means we translate and notarize your documents; we do not file your CORE application, request ECFMG certification or arrange a sponsoring entity.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
