Two written standards, both official
Norwegian is written in two official forms, Bokmål and Nynorsk, and a public body may issue in either. Two documents about the same person can therefore be worded differently while saying the same thing, and neither is irregular. We translate both.
Civil records come from the population register kept by the tax administration: a fødselsattest for a birth and register extracts for family relationships and residence. They carry the fødselsnummer, the eleven-digit national identity number, reproduced exactly.
Letters and the rest of the file
Norwegian uses æ, ø and å, which are letters rather than accented vowels and sort at the end of the alphabet. Replacing them with ae, o and a produces a different name; we keep the spelling as issued and match your passport.
