Certified Vietnamese Bank Statement Translation

Dong figures are very large

Vietnam uses the dong, whose figures are large: a monthly salary runs to eight digits. Vietnamese numbers write a point for thousands and a comma for decimals, the inverse of US convention.

So 12.500.000 VND is twelve and a half million. A translation carrying the punctuation across unchanged misreads it by a factor of a million. We convert the notation and name the currency.

The confirmation, and the frozen balance

For visa purposes Vietnamese banks issue a xác nhận số dư — a balance confirmation — and frequently a sổ tiết kiệm, a savings passbook, and a confirmation may state that funds are blocked for a period.

That block is the point: it shows the money is real and still there. The unblock date is on the document and a confirmation whose block has lapsed proves less than the applicant thinks. We translate it prominently.

The CCCD, and the account

Vietnamese financial documents carry the CCCD, the twelve-digit citizen identification number, which does not change and replaced the nine-digit CMND — so a file may show both for one person.

Foreign currency accounts are permitted in defined circumstances and a statement states its currency in the header. We name it on the first line.

Diacritics, and the stamp

Vietnamese marks tone and vowel quality with diacritics, and stripping them changes names: Hà, Hạ and Há are different. We reproduce the Vietnamese from the printed page.
