Separación de cuerpos, and divorce by the wife's sole will
Uruguay provides separación de cuerpos, which suspends cohabitation while the marriage continues, and it has an unusual divorce ground: divorce at the sole will of the wife, available since 1913 and still in the Civil Code.
That provision has no equivalent in the countries around it and it means a Uruguayan divorce may rest on a ground a US reader will find surprising. We reproduce the article the instrument cites.
The three-appearance procedure
Divorce by the wife's sole will requires her to appear before the court on three occasions at defined intervals, and the file records each appearance.
So a Uruguayan divorce file may contain three short minutes rather than a hearing, and a reader expecting a trial record finds something else. We translate each appearance with its date.
The Registro de Estado Civil
The dissolution is recorded against the marriage entry at the Dirección General del Registro de Estado Civil, and a partida de matrimonio issued afterwards carries the annotation.

The cédula, and the 2018 law
The cédula de identidad is seven digits plus a check digit after a hyphen, and it does not change. We reproduce it exactly including the check digit.
