Séparation de corps, from the French code
Haitian family law descends from the French Civil Code and provides séparation de corps, which suspends the obligation to cohabit and separates property while leaving the marriage in existence, and which may be converted into divorce.
The vocabulary is nineteenth-century French and reads older than a US reader expects. That is period rather than error, and we translate the terms as written.

Haitian divorce goes through the tribunal de première instance, and the judgment must be transcribed into the civil status register and published before it produces full effect.
