Somalia has had no functioning civil registration system since 1991 and the archives were destroyed, so marriages of that whole period generally produced no civil record. A marriage is concluded as a nikah before a sheikh and witnessed, and the document — if there is one — is religious rather than civil.
That is not a defect in anyone's file and not something a translation can fix. What these files carry instead is declarations from the couple and witnesses, letters from elders or community organisations, consular documents, or UNHCR and camp registration from a country of first asylum. Names without surnames
A Somali name is given name, father's name and grandfather's name rather than a family surname, so a husband and wife share nothing in their names and a US form asking for a married surname has nowhere to put anything. We reproduce each name as given and make the structure explicit.
