Priznanje očinstva, and who must agree
Serbian acknowledgment of paternity is made before the registrar, a social welfare body, a court or a notary, and it requires the mother's consent. Where the child is over sixteen, the child must consent too.
It may be made before the birth. It takes effect on entry in the register of births, and the register entry is what evidences it.
The presumption, and the deadline
A child born during marriage or within three hundred days of its end is presumed the husband's, and the presumption may be challenged within statutory periods running from the birth or from learning the facts.
Until it is, another man cannot acknowledge. We name what the instrument says rather than describing every document as an acknowledgment.
The matična knjiga rođenih
The acknowledgment is entered in the matična knjiga rođenih, and an izvod issued afterwards shows the father.
Serbia also issues extracts on the multilingual international form, which some offices accept untranslated. We will tell you if you do not need us.
Two alphabets, and the JMBG
Serbian is written in both Cyrillic and Latin and both are official, so a name appears one way on a register extract and another on an identity document. One name, two alphabets.
