Joint application, in the Soviet pattern
Armenian establishment of paternity follows the pattern inherited from the Soviet ZAGS: a joint application by the mother and the man to the civil status acts registration agency, which records it and reissues the birth certificate.
Where they do not agree, a court establishes paternity and the judgment must then be registered. A judgment alone does not amend the record.
The patronymic changes
Armenian documents record a patronymic formed from the father's given name, so establishing paternity changes the child's own middle name as well as the record of the parent.
Newer Armenian documents increasingly omit the patronymic, so an older and a newer record may differ both in the middle name and in whether one appears at all. We explain both.
The certificate, and the surname
The agency issues a certificate of establishment of paternity as a document in its own right, and the birth certificate is reissued showing the father. A complete packet has both.
The child may take the father's surname by agreement, recorded at the same time.
The alphabet, and -yan or -ian
Armenian has its own alphabet and no single accepted romanisation, and Eastern and Western Armenian pronounce the same letters differently.
Surnames ending -յան appear as -yan on Armenian documents and -ian in most diaspora spellings. One family name. See our Armenian page.
