Licence, master, doctorat

Senegalese universities, including Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar and Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis, award degrees in the licence-master-doctorate (LMD) system. A licence is a three-year first degree, not a licence to practise, so the translation keeps the term Licence and makes clear it is a degree; its US equivalence is for the evaluator to decide. Older diplomas such as the maîtrise and DEA come from the system that came before.

The diploma is signed by the rector and names the field, the specialisation (spécialité) and sometimes the honours. See our French page.

The attestation de réussite

Diplomas can take months or years to be printed, so graduates are first given a certificate of success (attestation de réussite) signed by the dean or the head of the faculty's academic office. Many people only ever hold the attestation. We translate it as an attestation, not as a diploma, because an evaluator needs to know which one they are reading.

Evaluators and licensing boards usually want the degree together with the transcript; see the academic transcript page and our credential evaluation page. If the school is private, the evaluator may check its standing separately.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Senegalese "licence" a professional licence?

No. It is a three-year first degree. We say so in the translation and keep the French term.

I only have the attestation de réussite.

Very common. We translate it as an attestation; ask the evaluator if it is enough.

My diploma says "maîtrise".

That is a degree from the system before LMD. We translate it and keep the original term.

Is acceptance by universities, colleges and schools guaranteed?

Yes. Our certified translations are guaranteed to be accepted by universities, colleges and schools in the United States — and by USCIS, the NVC, courts, government agencies and employers — or your money back. The guarantee covers the translation itself, not the original document or the admission decision, and it covers credential evaluation agencies such as WES and ECE as well. Full terms are in our refund policy.
