The doctor's certificate is not the death act
When someone dies in a Cameroonian hospital, a doctor signs a medical certificate of death. That is not the civil record. The death act (acte de décès) is drawn up by the civil status registrar of the place of death on a declaration by the family, and it is the document an estate, an insurer or USCIS normally expects.
Many deaths are never registered: BUNEC, the national civil status bureau, has put the registration rate at around one in ten. Law No. 2024/016 of 23 December 2024 made registration mandatory, but older deaths are often recorded late, sometimes on the strength of a court judgment, which we translate as the judgment it is.
French or English, and what a late record shows
As with births, acts from the Northwest and Southwest are usually in English and need no translation; acts from the rest of the country are in French. A late registration gives two dates, the death and the registration, and we keep them distinct so a reader does not take one for the other.
For a widow or widower's file, the death act often travels with the marriage act; see our Cameroonian marriage certificate page and our French page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
I only have the hospital's certificate.
We translate it, but it is a medical document, not the civil death act. Ask the receiving office whether it will accept it.
The death was registered years later.
That is common. The act shows the date of death and the date of registration, and the translation keeps both.
Do you translate the cause of death?
Yes, whatever the document states, including handwritten entries. Cameroonian death acts often do not give a cause.
