Registered before the commune civil registrar
A Cambodian marriage is legally valid when the couple registers it before the civil registrar of the commune or sangkat where they applied. The traditional wedding, with its ceremonies set by an achar, is a separate event and produces no civil record. A US office wants the commune's marriage certificate, issued in Khmer with the commune seal.
The certificate records both spouses' names, dates and places of birth, addresses, the parents' names and the date of registration, with the registrar's signature. Every field and stamp is translated. Marriages between a Cambodian and a foreigner follow a separate procedure involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the paperwork from that step is translated as its own document. See our Khmer translation page.
Older marriages, and marriages registered late
Many couples married in the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s without a civil record, or under a registry that was later abandoned, and registered the marriage years afterwards. The certificate then shows a registration date long after the wedding. We translate both dates exactly as written; the difference is not an error.
Names are written family name first, and the spelling of a spouse's name may not match the passport. We follow the passport and note the variant. If the marriage has ended, see our divorce page; for a child's recognition by the father, see the paternity page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
We had a traditional wedding but never registered. What do we translate?
A traditional ceremony is not a civil registration. Whatever documents you hold, such as photos, letters or a later commune certificate, we can translate, and the receiving office decides what it accepts.
The registration date is years after our wedding.
Late registration is common in Cambodia. We translate both dates as they appear.
Do I need the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to legalise it?
Some foreign authorities ask for that. USCIS does not; it asks for a complete certified translation of the certificate.
