Divorce goes through the court

Under the Civil Code, in force since December 2011, a Cambodian divorce is granted by the court of first instance, and Article 978 sets out the grounds. An informal or community separation does not end a marriage in law. The document to translate is the court's judgment, in Khmer, with the court's seal, the judges' names and the date.

Couples are often first sent to the commune chief to attempt reconciliation, and some files include a commune record of that step. It is not a divorce, but we translate it if it is part of your file. A judgment that has been appealed is followed by the appellate decision, and the final one is what an officer looks for. See our Khmer translation page.

Custody, property, and the date it became final

A Cambodian divorce judgment usually deals with child custody and support and the division of jointly owned property in the same text. Those sections are translated in full, because a US court or USCIS may need them as much as the dissolution itself.

Older divorces may have been decided under the 1989 Law on Marriage and Family, before the Civil Code came into force, and say so. We translate the law cited as written. If you are married again, US offices compare the divorce date with the new marriage; see our marriage certificate page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is a letter from the commune chief enough?

A commune reconciliation record is not a divorce. A Cambodian divorce is granted by a court. We translate whatever you have, and the receiving office decides what it accepts.

The judgment includes property and custody. Do I need all of it translated?

USCIS asks for complete translations, so we translate the whole judgment.

My divorce was before 2011.

It was decided under earlier law, usually the 1989 Law on Marriage and Family. We translate the judgment as written, including the law it cites.
