Commune death registration
Deaths are registered with the civil registrar of the commune or sangkat where they occurred, and the death certificate is issued in Khmer with the commune seal. It gives the deceased's name, age, the date and place of death and the declarant. A cause of death is often not shown; where a hospital certificate states one, it is a separate document and we translate it separately.
Since July 2024, the Law on Civil Status, Civil Status Statistics and Identification links civil registration with health facilities and a central population register, so recent deaths may be recorded more fully than older ones. See our Khmer translation page.
Deaths that were never registered
Most deaths under the Khmer Rouge between 1975 and 1979 were never recorded, and many later ones in rural areas were not either. Families who need proof for an inheritance or a US petition often hold a death certificate registered much later, a commune attestation or a court decision. We translate each for what it is and keep the dates of the death and the registration distinct.
A parent's death certificate often accompanies a birth certificate or property documents in an estate file. The name on the certificate may be romanised differently from other papers; we note variants rather than altering the record.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My parent died in the Khmer Rouge period and there is no record.
That is common. A later registration, commune attestation or affidavit can be translated. What a US office will accept is for that office to decide.
The certificate does not give a cause of death.
Many Cambodian commune certificates do not. A separate hospital certificate, if you have one, can be translated alongside.
Does the translation convert the Buddhist Era date?
We translate dates as they appear. Where the document also gives a Gregorian date, that is the one US offices use.
