Two legal systems, two kinds of decree

Cameroon has no single divorce law. In the Northwest and Southwest regions the High Court applies the English Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, and the judgment is written in English, often as a decree nisi followed by a decree absolute; it needs no translation. In the eight French-speaking regions the court applies the Civil Code, where divorce is granted for fault, and the judgment (jugement de divorce) is in French.

A draft Code of Persons and the Family, meant to unify the two, has been pending since 2020, and we found no sign that it has been adopted. So the law cited in a French-language judgment is still the Civil Code, and we translate the articles and grounds exactly as the court wrote them.

The judgment, the certificate of non-appeal and the marginal note

A French-language divorce file usually holds the judgment itself, a certificate that no appeal was lodged (certificat de non-appel) and, once the divorce is final, a note written in the margin of the marriage act. US offices often want to see that the divorce became final, so bring all three if you have them.

The marriage act may also record the monogamy or polygamy option chosen at the wedding; see our Cameroonian marriage certificate page and our French page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

My divorce was granted in Bamenda and is in English.

Then it does not need translating. Only French-language judgments and annotations do.

What is a certificat de non-appel?

A court registry certificate stating that no appeal was filed against the judgment. We translate it as a separate document.

Does the divorce need legalisation for USCIS?

No. USCIS does not ask for legalisation. Cameroon is not in the Apostille Convention, so if another office asks, the route is legalisation through the Ministry of External Relations — see apostille and translation.
