The ECOWAS biometric identity card
Since 2016 Senegal has issued the ECOWAS biometric identity card (carte d'identité biométrique CEDEAO), a chip card that replaced the digitised card of 2005. The front reads "ECOWAS IDENTITY CARD / BILHETE DE IDENTIDADE CEDEAO" beside the French text, and gives given names, family name, date and place of birth, sex, issue and expiry dates, address, height and the registration centre. Applications go through prefects, sub-prefects, police or gendarmerie.
The back is also the voter card. It carries the voter number, region, commune, polling station and the national identification number (NIN), or the words personne non inscrite sur le fichier électoral for someone not registered to vote. Send both sides, and see our French page.
Reading the 17-digit number
The card number has 17 digits: one for sex (1 male, 2 female), two for the region, eight for the date of birth as year, month and day, five generated by the system and a check digit. We copy it digit by digit; if it does not match the printed birth date, we add a note rather than change it.
The parents' names are stored in the chip, not printed, so the card does not prove parentage; use the birth certificate for that. The card is valid for ten years, and changes to it were before parliament in 2026, so older and newer cards may both turn up.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need both sides?
Yes. The back carries the NIN and the voter details.
The card has English and Portuguese on it already.
Only the title. The field labels and the data around them are in French, so the card is translated in full.
Does the card show my parents' names?
No. They are only in the chip. Use the birth certificate to prove parentage.
