A real certificate of title, in Spanish
Puerto Rico issues a Certificado de Título through DTOP and its CESCO offices, a genuine certificate of title in the US pattern with the owner, the VIN, the year and any lienholder.
It is not a foreign document, and no apostille is needed. But it is in Spanish, and a mainland registry, lender or insurer will require a certified English translation.
The marbete, and the annual renewal
The marbete is the annual registration sticker, bundling the compulsory ACAA insurance and the licence fee, and the vehicle also holds a licencia registration card.
Clients send the marbete receipt as proof of ownership. It proves the year is paid, not who owns the car, and we name which document you have.
The lien, and the release
A financed vehicle carries a gravamen naming the lender on the title, released by the lender so a clean title can issue.
A title still showing a gravamen will stop a mainland transfer just as a lien would. We translate the endorsement and the release.
Moving to the mainland
Bringing a Puerto Rico vehicle to a mainland state requires the Spanish title, the registration and usually a VIN inspection, and states differ on whether they treat it as an in-state or an out-of-state title.
