The bank letter is what a consulate reads
Pakistani banks issue a bank statement stamped and signed at the branch and, separately, a bank certificate or maintenance letter on letterhead stating the holder, the account, the opening date and the balance.
Consular applications ask for both, and the average balance over six months is what is read rather than the closing figure, because a single deposit before the interview cannot produce it. We translate the letterhead, the stamp and the signature block with the figures.
IBAN, and the CNIC
Pakistan uses IBAN beginning PK for domestic transfers, and statements carry the holder's CNIC — the thirteen-digit national identity number — which does not change with a name.
The CNIC is the cross-check across a Pakistani file and it is more reliable than a name, which romanises several ways. We reproduce both as labelled.
Rupees, lakh and the digit grouping
Pakistani amounts are described in lakh (one hundred thousand) and crore (ten million), and Pakistani digit grouping places commas differently: 12,34,567 is 1,234,567.
A translation that carries the grouping across unchanged misreads the figure. We convert the grouping, name the unit and give the amount in Western notation.
Zakat, and the deductions
Pakistani savings accounts held by Muslim account holders are subject to an annual zakat deduction at a set date unless an exemption declaration is filed, and it appears on the statement as a once-yearly debit.
