There is no title document
Mexico issues no equivalent of a US certificate of title. Ownership is proved by the factura — the original sales invoice from the dealer — endorsed on the back by each successive seller.
A DMV clerk asking for "the title" will be handed an invoice, and it is the correct document. Where the original is lost or held by a lender, a carta factura from the dealer or financier stands in for it.
The tarjeta de circulación, which is not ownership
The tarjeta de circulación is the state registration card giving the plate, the VIN and the registered holder. It proves the vehicle is registered, not who owns it.
Clients send it believing it is the title. The two documents answer different questions and we say which you have.
REPUVE, and the theft check
The REPUVE national vehicle registry carries a windscreen sticker and an online record, and it is what a buyer checks for reported theft or a customs irregularity.
A REPUVE printout in the file is a search result rather than a title, and we name it as that.
Importing to the United States
A Mexican vehicle imported to the US needs the endorsed factura, the pedimento de importación if it was itself imported into Mexico, and EPA and DOT conformity.
