The register that replaced the one your parents used
South Korea does not issue a standalone birth certificate the way most countries do. Family facts live in a register, and on 1 January 2008 the system changed entirely: the hoju household-head register, struck down as unconstitutional, was replaced by the Family Relations Register.
So a Korean file routinely contains documents from two different systems. Older papers are extracts from the hoju register, organised around a male household head; current ones are certificates drawn from the family relations system. Both are genuine and we translate either — but they are not the same document and the translation says which it is.
Several certificates, one register
The current system issues different certificates from the same underlying record, each showing a different slice: a basic certificate with the person's own details, a family relation certificate showing parents and children, a marriage certificate, an adoption certificate. Offices ask for specific ones and they are not interchangeable.

What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

A standard translation is for business or personal use where certification is not needed, such as CVs, client intake forms or marketing material, and is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
Frequently asked questions
I was asked for a birth certificate and Korea gave me a family certificate.
That is the normal Korean document. Births are recorded in the family relations register rather than certified separately, and the certificate showing parentage is what stands in for it.
My older documents look completely different.
Anything from before 2008 comes from the hoju register, which was abolished. We translate those too and identify which system the document belongs to.
