Korea does not issue a birth certificate either
South Korea abolished the hoju household register on 1 January 2008, after the Constitutional Court struck it down, and replaced it with the family relations registration system. There is no standalone birth certificate. What stands in for one is the basic certificate (기본증명서), which records the birth, and the family relations certificate (가족관계증명서), which shows parents, spouse and children.

Two systems in one file
Because the change happened in 2008, a Korean family file routinely contains documents from both systems, and they are not the same document. A pre-2008 hoju extract and a post-2008 family relations certificate record overlapping facts in different structures, and the translation says which system each came from rather than presenting them as interchangeable.
Korean names are usually three syllables — family name first — and romanise several ways: Lee, Yi and Rhee are the same name. We follow the passport and note genuine differences. See our Korean page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is for business or personal use where certification is not needed, such as CVs, client intake forms or marketing material, and is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Which certificate is the birth certificate?
The 기본증명서, the basic certificate. Many files also need the 가족관계증명서 to show parentage, and offices asking for the old 호적등본 now mean that one.
