The CDP, which replaced the paper certificate
Italy's ownership document is the Certificato di Proprietà held at the PRA, the public vehicle register, and since 2015 it is digital — a CDPD with no paper original, printable as a copy.
A client with no paper title has not lost it. The register is the record, and we translate the printout and say what it is.
The carta di circolazione, and the DU
The carta di circolazione is the registration document carried in the vehicle, and since 2020 new registrations receive a Documento Unico combining circulation and ownership in one.
So Italian files hold three possible arrangements depending on the date. We name which the document is rather than assuming.
The transfer, and the authenticated signature
An Italian transfer requires the seller's signature to be authenticated at a notary, a municipal office or an ACI or agency counter, and it is then registered at the PRA within sixty days.
Late registration attracts a penalty, and the date matters. We translate the authentication and the PRA entry with their dates.
Fermo amministrativo, and the identifiers
An Italian vehicle can be subject to fermo amministrativo, an administrative hold registered by a tax collection agency that blocks use and sale until the debt is paid.
