The passbook is still a document

Indian banks issue a passbook — a physical book printed by machine at the branch with each transaction line — and for a great many account holders it is the primary record rather than a statement.

A passbook is a legitimate bank document and it is what many applicants have. It carries the branch stamp and the account details on the inside cover, and we translate or transcribe the whole thing including the printed lines.

IFSC, MICR and the account number

An Indian account is identified by the account number plus the IFSC — an eleven-character branch code — and older documents also carry a MICR code. The IFSC is what identifies the branch for transfers.

A US office told only an account number cannot locate the branch. We reproduce all of the codes as labelled rather than selecting one.

Cr and Dr, and lakh and crore

Indian statements mark each line Cr or Dr — credit or debit — rather than using signs or separate columns, and a reader who misses the marker reads a withdrawal as a deposit.

Amounts are frequently described in lakh (one hundred thousand) and crore (ten million), and Indian digit grouping places commas differently — 12,34,567 is 1,234,567. We convert the grouping and name the unit.

The bank certificate, and what a consulate wants

For visa purposes Indian banks issue a bank certificate or balance certificate on letterhead, signed and stamped by the branch manager, and consulates commonly ask for that alongside six months of statements.

Indian statements are in English, so a translation is frequently unnecessary and we would rather tell you. What is regularly needed is a legible transcription of a passbook. See our Hindi page.

Ordering, and what the certification covers

Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.

Frequently asked questions

Is a passbook acceptable?

It is a legitimate bank document and what many account holders have. We transcribe the whole thing including the branch stamp.

What is an IFSC?

An eleven-character branch code that identifies the branch for transfers. An account number alone does not locate it.

What does Cr mean on my statement?

Credit. Dr is debit. Indian statements mark each line rather than using signs, and missing it reverses the reading.

Do I need a translation?

Often not — Indian statements are in English. We are more often asked for a legible transcription of a passbook.

Ready to get started?

Upload the document and receive the certified translation, typically within 24 hours.
