Surname first, on every document
Hungarian writes the family name before the given name, so a person recorded as Nagy István is István Nagy. Every Hungarian civil document follows that order, and a translation that carries it across silently hands a US reader a reversed name.
We make the order explicit. In a name-change document this matters twice over, because the reader is comparing two names and needs to know which element actually changed.
Married name forms are a system, not a choice of one
Hungarian law offers several married name forms, including the traditional -né suffix: Nagy Istvánné means "the wife of István Nagy" and contains no part of the woman's own name at all. Other permitted forms combine the husband's surname with her given name, or keep her own name entirely.
A US reader seeing Nagy Istvánné on an old document and Kovács Mária on a new one is looking at one person, and a change between forms is a registered change of name. We explain the form rather than transliterating it into nonsense.
The change itself is granted centrally
A change of birth name in Hungary is granted centrally by the authority responsible for registry matters rather than by the local registrar, and it is exceptional — granted on substantial grounds rather than on request.
The resulting decision is recorded in the electronic registry and a new anyakönyvi kivonat is issued. We name the deciding authority and the decision reference exactly.
ő, ű, and the personal identifier
Hungarian uses ő and ű alongside the more familiar accented vowels, and stripping them changes the name. We reproduce the Hungarian and note the passport rendering.
