Nine indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples
Honduras recognises nine indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples with languages including Garífuna, Miskito, Tolupán, Pech, Tawahka and Chortí, with an intercultural bilingual education programme.
Garífuna is an Arawakan language with African and Carib influences, spoken along the Caribbean coast and recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage. A certificate in one of those attests a language rather than a dialect, and we name it.
Bay Islands English
The Bay Islands have an English-speaking population descended from British settlement, and English is used there alongside Spanish in a way it is not on the mainland.
So a Honduran holding an English-medium education record from the Bay Islands is not unusual, and we name the issuing institution and its location.
No national Spanish examination
Honduras does not operate a national Spanish proficiency examination. Spanish for foreign learners is certified by university language centres and by international examinations at centres in the country.
