Gourdes, dollars, and the "Haitian dollar"
Haiti's currency is the gourde, but prices are very commonly quoted in "Haitian dollars" — a unit of account equal to five gourdes with no note or coin behind it, surviving from a historical peg.
So a figure described as dollars on a Haitian document may be gourdes divided by five, and not US dollars at all. That is a genuine trap and we say which unit a figure is in rather than reproducing the word "dollar" unexplained.
Remittances, and the transfer houses
Remittances from the United States, Canada, France and the Dominican Republic are a very large share of Haitian household income, and much of it arrives through transfer houses rather than banks.
So a bank statement may show only part of the picture, with transfer house receipts held separately. We translate the receipts too and name the operator.
The NIF, the CIN and the account
Haitian financial documents carry the NIF tax number and the CIN identity number from the Office National d'Identification, and both appear on formal documents.
We reproduce each as labelled. Account numbers are bank-specific and a statement names the branch, which we reproduce.
French, and the certificate
Haitian bank documents are written in French, with Creole appearing on some customer material, and French numbers write a comma as the decimal separator.
Banks issue an attestation bancaire on letterhead, stamped and signed, which is what a consulate generally requires. Haiti is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so documents go through consular legalisation. See our French page.
