Ellinomatheia, the state certificate

The Certificate of Attainment in Greek (Πιστοποιητικό Ελληνομάθειας) is issued by the Centre for the Greek Language under the Ministry of Education at CEFR levels A1 to C2, examined at centres in Greece and abroad.

It is the state certificate and it is what Greek authorities and universities recognise. A certificate from a private school is a different thing and we name the issuer.

B1 for citizenship, and the other route

Greek naturalisation requires demonstrated Greek, and the B1 level of the Ellinomatheia certificate is the standard evidence. Greece also runs a separate examination for citizenship covering language together with history, geography and political institutions.

The two documents look different and satisfy different parts of the process. We name which examination the certificate records.

What universities and professional bodies want

Greek universities require the certificate at levels set per programme for Greek-taught admission, and several regulated professions require it for registration. The certificate states the level, the examination session and the registration number.

The registration number is how it is verified with the Centre for the Greek Language, and we reproduce it exactly.

Transliteration, and the name on the certificate

Greek names romanise several ways, and the name on a Greek certificate may be transliterated differently from the name on a US record or a passport — Ioannis, Ioannes, Yannis for one name.
