No legal separation, and two divorce routes
Armenian law provides no legal separation. Where both spouses agree and there are no minor children, divorce is registered administratively with the civil status acts registration agency; otherwise it is by court.
So an Armenian file may hold a registry certificate, a judgment, or both, and the registry record is what evidences the registered status.
The certificate of divorce
The registration agency issues a certificate of divorce as a document in its own right, in the pattern inherited from the Soviet ZAGS, and also annotates the marriage record.
A judgment must be registered before the status changes, so a judgment alone is not the end of the process. Applicants routinely send one and not the other.
Surnames, and the patronymic
A spouse may revert to a pre-marriage surname on divorce and the choice is recorded. Armenian documents also carry a patronymic from the father's given name, which is not a middle name and does not change.
Newer Armenian documents increasingly omit the patronymic, so an older and a newer record show different numbers of name elements.
The alphabet, and -yan or -ian
Armenian has its own alphabet and no single accepted romanisation, and Eastern and Western Armenian pronounce the same letters differently.
Surnames ending -յան appear as -yan on Armenian documents and -ian in most diaspora spellings. One family name, and the commonest apparent discrepancy. See our Armenian page.
