Eastern and Western Armenian are certified separately
Armenian has two literary standards. Eastern Armenian is the language of Armenia and Iran; Western Armenian is the diaspora language descended from the Ottoman provinces, classified as endangered by UNESCO.
They differ in pronunciation, verb conjugation and orthographic tradition, and a certificate in one is not a certificate in the other. We name which the document attests, because it is the first thing a reader needs.
Where certification comes from
Armenian proficiency is certified by university language centres in Armenia, by diaspora institutions teaching Western Armenian in Lebanon, the United States and elsewhere, and through heritage school programmes.
A diaspora school certificate and a university examination are different documents, and we name the institution and the country.
The classical orthography
Armenia adopted a reformed orthography in the Soviet period, while the diaspora retained the classical orthography, so the same language is written two ways.
A certificate may be in either, and a reader who does not know the reform exists sees an inconsistency that is not one. We note which orthography the document uses.
The alphabet, and -yan or -ian
Armenian has its own alphabet and no single accepted romanisation, and Eastern and Western pronounce the same letters differently.
Surnames ending -յան appear as -yan from Eastern and -ian from Western, which is itself a signal of which tradition the document comes from. See our Armenian page.
Ordering, and what the certification covers
Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
Frequently asked questions
Which Armenian does the certificate attest?
Eastern or Western. They differ substantially and a certificate in one is not a certificate in the other.
My certificate is from a diaspora school.
Common for Western Armenian. A different document from a university examination, and we name the institution and country.
Why is the spelling different from Armenia's?
Armenia adopted a reformed orthography in the Soviet period; the diaspora retained the classical one. Same language, two spellings.
-yan or -ian?
Eastern and Western romanisations, which also signal which tradition the document comes from.
