Washington State University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Washington State University asks for transcripts in English when possible; if they are not available in English they must be translated, and WSU International Admissions wants both the original and the translated copy. It does not say who must translate. Washington State University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. WSU evaluates foreign grades itself, so no agency report is needed; after a graduate admission, though, the official records must come from each school with its own English translation, which we cannot send for you.

What WSU asks for
TranslationTranscripts should be in English when possible; if not, they must be translated, and the original and the translated copy both go to International Admissions (source).
Who may translateNot stated for undergraduate admission. The rule names the document, not the translator.
EvaluationWSU's own credential evaluators convert your high school grades to a US scale; no agency is needed (source). The Graduate School also says a foreign credential evaluation is not required (source).
Copies or originalsAdmission decisions are made on unofficial copies, attached to the application or emailed; official transcripts are due before you arrive (source).
Official deliveryFrom your school by email from a verified school address, through Parchment, Naviance, NSC, Scribbles or eScrip-Safe, or by sealed mail; you may carry the envelope if it stays sealed (source).
DeadlinesApplications: spring Nov 15, summer Mar 15, fall Jun 15; all documents: Dec 1, Apr 1, Jul 1 (source).
GraduateApply with an unofficial native-language copy and its English translation; if admitted, each school must send both the English translation and the original-language record, sealed (source).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. WSU International Programs says transcripts not available in English "will need to be translated" and asks for the original and the translated copy, without limiting who translates (admission requirements); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Undergraduate: decided on copies, evaluated in-house

WSU International Admissions reviews your application on unofficial copies of your secondary and post-secondary transcripts, gives you a decision, and only then asks for official transcripts, which must reach WSU before you arrive (source). First-year applicants send secondary records; applicants with a year or more of college send college transcripts instead.

There is no evaluation agency in the process. WSU's credential evaluators read your transcripts and convert them to a US grading scale to set your GPA (source). That puts the translation in front of the evaluator, so every subject, mark and grading note on the original needs to be in it. If you sat a national or board examination, WSU gives those results priority over school transcripts, and some, such as WASSCE, it can verify online (source).

Transfer credit from abroad: syllabi in English

Transfer credit from a university outside the US is decided course by course from your syllabi. WSU asks international transfers to submit English-language syllabi with a Course Equivalency Evaluation Request Form, as early as possible (source), and recommends bringing course descriptions and syllabi translated into English (source). The transfer credit report is completed only once official transcripts arrive (source).

Syllabi are long. Translating only the courses you want credit for, with the course code and hours as on the transcript, keeps the cost down.

Graduate School: stricter after admission

For the application, the Graduate School accepts an unofficial copy of the transcript in your native language with its English translation, uploaded to the online application, and says a foreign credential evaluation is not required (source). It also links to a translation service run by an evaluation company.

After admission the rule tightens. Official transcripts, mark sheets and degree certificates from schools outside the US or Canada must arrive in a stamped, sealed envelope, and for non-English-speaking countries each institution must submit both the English translation and the original-language record (source). A translation you order can be used for the application, but the official set has to come from your school.

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to WSU

Undergraduates attach unofficial transcripts and translations to the WSU international application or email them to International Admissions; the official transcripts come from the school before arrival (source, official transcripts).

Graduate applicants upload the native-language copy and its English translation to the online application (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For WSU, we translate your transcripts, diplomas and syllabi; the official graduate records that each school must send with its own translation are outside what we can do.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my transcripts for WSU?

WSU's international admission requirements ask for translated transcripts plus the original and do not name who must translate (source). A certified translation from a professional service qualifies.

Do I need WES or another evaluation for WSU?

No. WSU evaluates international transcripts itself (source), and the Graduate School says a foreign credential evaluation is not required (source).

Can I apply with unofficial translated copies?

Yes. WSU decides on unofficial copies and asks for official transcripts before you arrive (source).

Do my syllabi need to be in English for transfer credit?

Yes. International transfers submit English-language syllabi with the Course Equivalency Evaluation Request Form (source).

What does the Graduate School need after admission?

Official records in a sealed envelope; for non-English-speaking countries each institution sends the English translation and the original-language record (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
