University of New Mexico: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
The University of New Mexico asks international applicants for official transcripts and graduation certificates with an English translation when they are not in English, and its admissions guidance points to a certified academic translation service, naming the American Translators Association as an example. University of New Mexico accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Graduate applicants upload transcripts and degree certificates with official English translations; a few departments add their own conditions, such as Physics, which wants the translation stamped by your university registrar.
Documents on request
UNM lists what to send after it processes your application.
Both languages
Original-language records plus the English version.
Real course names
UNM wants "College Algebra", not "College Math".
UNM requirements at a glance
| What UNM asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | Official transcripts and graduation certificates, with a translation if they are not in English (Freshmen and transfer application timeline and steps (International Admissions)). Records must be submitted in the original language as well as in English (Applying to UNM as an undergraduate (UNM Online)). |
| Who may translate | The international pages do not restrict it; UNM's admissions guidance names a service such as the American Translators Association or another certified academic translation service (Applying to UNM as an undergraduate (UNM Online)). |
| Evaluation | Not asked for on the international undergraduate pages; UNM evaluates transfer coursework after you are admitted to a degree program (Applying to UNM as an undergraduate (UNM Online)). Civil Engineering accepts a NACES evaluation as an alternative for graduate applicants (Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering: admissions procedure and documents). |
| When to send | After you apply and pay the $50 fee, UNM tells you which documents it needs. Required-document deadlines for applicants abroad: October 1, 2026 for spring 2027, June 1, 2027 for fall 2027 (Freshmen and transfer application timeline and steps (International Admissions)). |
| Where | To International Admissions at the Global Education Office, by courier or by email to goglobal@unm.edu; transcripts come directly from the issuing school (Applying to graduate programs (UNM Online)). |
| Graduate | Upload transcripts and degree certificates with official English translations to the graduate application; official documents follow an offer of admission, before the I-20 (checklist, FAQ). |
| Stricter departments | Physics and Astronomy: the English version must be stamped by your university registrar, not only by the translator (Physics and Astronomy graduate FAQ). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. UNM International Admissions asks for graduation certificates "with translation, if necessary" without limiting who translates (application steps), and UNM's admissions guidance says to use a service such as the American Translators Association or another certified academic translation service (applying to UNM). eVerbary is a certified translation service and an ATA corporate member. Apply first, then send documents
UNM's international timeline puts the application before the paperwork. You apply online and pay the $50 fee; once International Admissions has processed the application, it writes to tell you which documents it needs, usually official transcripts, graduation certificates with translation if necessary, and English proficiency scores (Freshmen and transfer application timeline and steps (International Admissions), FAQ). That gives you time to order the translation, but the window is fixed: for applicants abroad the required documents are due October 1, 2026 for spring 2027 and June 1, 2027 for fall 2027; transfers already in the US have until November 15, 2026 and July 1, 2027.
What you send depends on the country. UNM keeps a table by home country of the secondary credentials it expects: for Argentina, official transcripts and the Bachiller; for Mexico, official transcripts and the Certificado de Bachillerato; for India, the Secondary (X) and Higher Secondary (XII) results. The translation should carry the credential's original name so UNM can match it with that table.
Course names, both languages, and who translates
For coursework from outside the US and Canada, UNM wants official transcripts in English and in the original language, and suggests a service such as the American Translators Association or another certified academic translation service (Applying to UNM as an undergraduate (UNM Online)). Its graduate guidance adds a practical request: the translation should give the actual name of each course, for example "College Algebra" rather than a generic "College Math" (Applying to graduate programs (UNM Online)). We translate course titles as printed and do not summarize them.
The same graduate page says to have transcripts "translated and evaluated" by such a service. The ATA is a professional association of translators, not an evaluator, and UNM's central international pages do not ask for an evaluation; if you are unsure whether your program wants one, ask it before you order.
Graduate departments that add their own rules
Graduate admission is reviewed by each department, and some publish extra conditions. Physics and Astronomy has no preferred translation agency, but if you accept its offer, the English version and the original must be stamped or verified by your university registrar, not only by the translator (Physics and Astronomy graduate FAQ). If you apply there, plan for your registrar to stamp our translation.
Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering accepts either transcripts attested by the issuing university's records official or an evaluation by a NACES member; with an evaluation you still send a photocopy of the original transcript and an English translation directly to UNM (Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering: admissions procedure and documents).
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school transcripts and the graduation certificate (Bachiller, Certificado de Bachillerato, and similar)
- National exam results named in UNM's country table
- University transcripts and degree certificates, for transfer or graduate applicants
- Course descriptions, when a department asks for them to assess transfer credit
- Bank statements for the I-20, if they are not in English
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UNM
First-year and transfer applicants send the documents UNM asks for to International Admissions at the Global Education Office, by courier or email to goglobal@unm.edu; the transcripts themselves must come straight from the issuing school, and the translation goes with them (Applying to graduate programs (UNM Online), application steps).
Graduate applicants upload transcripts, degree certificates and their English translations to the graduate application, then send official documents after an offer of admission (checklist).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UNM that means we translate your records, but we cannot send transcripts on behalf of your school, and we do not provide the NACES evaluation some departments accept or request.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my documents for UNM?
UNM's international pages do not limit who translates, and its admissions guidance names a service such as the American Translators Association or another certified academic translation service (Applying to UNM as an undergraduate (UNM Online)). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary fits that description.
When do I send the translated documents?
After you apply, UNM tells you which documents it needs. For applicants abroad they are due October 1, 2026 for spring 2027 and June 1, 2027 for fall 2027 (Freshmen and transfer application timeline and steps (International Admissions)).
Do I send the original-language transcript too?
Yes. UNM asks for official transcripts in both English and the original language (Applying to UNM as an undergraduate (UNM Online)).
Do graduate applicants send official transcripts with the application?
No. Master's and PhD applicants upload copies; official transcripts are required only after acceptance (International Admissions FAQ, checklist).
Does UNM Physics accept a translation from a translation company?
Yes, it has no preferred agency, but the translation must be stamped by your university registrar, not only by the translator (Physics and Astronomy graduate FAQ).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
