How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026
South Suburban College publishes no translation rule of its own: every student with foreign high school or college transcripts must have them evaluated by Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) before the first semester, and F-1 applicants may also use WES.
SSC's evaluation agencies, ECE and WES, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.
You order the translation first and send it to the agency with your records; the evaluation itself is something we do not provide.
SSC at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
SSC asks students with foreign high school or college transcripts for an evaluation by Educational Credential Evaluators (transcripts), and ECE accepts complete, word-for-word translations, including a certified translation from a professional service (ECE documentation requirements); WES, which SSC also names for F-1 applicants, requires a professional translator (WES). Worth knowing about SSC
ECE first
Named on every SSC page about foreign transcripts.
High school too
Not only college credit: secondary records as well.
Before semester one
The evaluation must be done before you start.
SSC requirements in detail
Translation
SSC states no translation rule; foreign transcripts reach it through an ECE evaluation (Transcripts: foreign transcript evaluation). The agency asks for the translation.
Who may translate
Set by the evaluation agency. ECE accepts any complete, word-for-word translation, including your own; WES wants a professional translator.
Evaluation
Foreign high school and/or college transcripts must be evaluated by ECE before your first semester at SSC, at your cost (Transcripts: foreign transcript evaluation).
F-1 applicants
Send the ECE form, documents and payment directly to ECE for an evaluation of your secondary education; ECE sends the report to SSC, and WES may also be used (catalog).
Deadlines (F-1)
All admission documents before July 1 for fall and November 1 for spring (Catalog: special program admissions).
Financial documents (F-1)
An affidavit stamped by a notary public or bank official, with original signed bank and employer letters showing $16,000 for the first 12 months (Catalog: special program admissions).
English (F-1)
TOEFL 40 internet-based or 173 computer-based, required except for applicants from England, Canada and Australia (Catalog: special program admissions).
What ECE and WES ask for the translation
ECE asks for complete, legible, word-for-word translations in the same format as the original document, and lets applicants prepare them themselves.
For $85 it sells a Translation Waiver: ECE then translates internally for the purpose of the report, and you receive no translation you could use elsewhere.
WES, which SSC names as an alternative for F-1 applicants, accepts only translations by a professional translator, such as a certified translation agency, and does not translate documents itself.
If you will also need your diploma or transcript in English for an employer, a licensing board or a later university, a certified translation from a professional service can be used for the ECE evaluation and kept for those other offices; the waiver leaves you without one.
Where SSC's pages differ
SSC describes the evaluation in three places.
The transcripts page says students with foreign high school and/or college transcripts must have them evaluated by Educational Credential Evaluators before their first semester (transcripts).
The FAQ says all foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an educational accreditation company and that SSC recommends ECE (FAQ).
The catalog's F-1 admission steps send secondary school documents to ECE and add that you may also use World Education Services (international student admission).
If you plan to use an agency other than ECE, confirm with Admissions first.
Because the rule covers high school records, it applies to residents and immigrants with a foreign diploma, not only to F-1 students; see high school diploma translation.
Adults who did not finish high school can earn a diploma through SSC's Human Success Project instead of a GED (Catalog: special program admissions).
Need a certified translation for SSC?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school diploma or leaving certificate
- Secondary school transcripts or mark sheets, every year
- University transcripts and degree certificates
- Grading scale or legend that explains the marks
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to SSC
The translation is not sent to SSC: it goes to ECE (or WES) with your documents and payment, and the agency sends the evaluation report to SSC (Catalog: special program admissions).
F-1 applicants mail the rest of the file to Admissions, South Suburban College, 15800 S. State Street, South Holland, IL 60473 (Catalog: special program admissions).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For SSC that means we translate your school records for the agency; the ECE or WES evaluation is ordered and paid by you after the translation, and the agency sends it to SSC.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does South Suburban College require a certified translation?
SSC itself publishes no translation rule. It requires an ECE evaluation of foreign transcripts (Transcripts: foreign transcript evaluation), and ECE asks for complete, word-for-word translations (ECE).
Do I need an evaluation for my foreign high school diploma?
Yes. SSC's rule covers foreign high school and college transcripts, before your first semester (Transcripts: foreign transcript evaluation).
Can I use WES instead of ECE for SSC?
The F-1 admission steps say you may also use World Education Services (Catalog: special program admissions); the transcripts page names only ECE (transcripts). Confirm with Admissions.
Can I translate my documents myself for ECE?
ECE allows it if the translation is word-for-word and in the same format as the original (ECE). WES does not accept translations by applicants (WES).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
