How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026
Salem State University asks that high school records, leaving certificates or exam results be in English or professionally translated, with the translation listing the courses completed and the grades received; college records from abroad must be professionally translated and evaluated course-by-course by an approved agency.
Salem State University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. The evaluation for college records, and for every graduate applicant with a degree from abroad, is something we do not provide.

Worth knowing about Salem State

High school and college records.
Courses and grades
The translation must list both.
Graduate: always evaluated
Even when the transcript is in English.
Salem State requirements in detail
Translation (undergraduate)
High school record, leaving certificate or exam results (or notarized copies) in English or professionally translated, listing courses and grades (Submit your transcripts).
Who may translate
A professional translator or service (Submit your transcripts).
Evaluation (high school)
Not required; admissions officers judge whether the record is comparable (Submit your transcripts).
College records (transfer)
Professionally translated and evaluated course-by-course by CED, ECE, The Evaluation Company, NAEG or WES; about three weeks (transfer international).
Graduate
A detailed course-by-course evaluation for any degree completed outside the US, even in English; no conditional admission (international graduate).
Course descriptions
For transfer credit, in English (officially translated if necessary), sent to the Student Navigation Center; not needed to apply (transfer credits).
What the translation must show
For first-year applicants, Salem State accepts the official high school record, leaving certificate or graduation exam results, or notarized copies of them, as long as they are in English or professionally translated, and the translation must include a list of courses completed and the grades received (submit your transcripts).
There is no evaluation requirement for the high school record; admissions officers decide whether it is comparable to a US transcript. A certified translation of the complete transcript, with every subject and mark, meets this.
Transfer applicants add college records: originals in English or professionally translated, plus a course-by-course evaluation of courses, grades, degrees and grade point averages from an approved agency (transfer international applicants). Translate first; the agency usually needs at least three weeks.
Credit, course descriptions and graduate applicants
Transfer credit needs one more document: official course or subject descriptions or syllabi in English, officially translated if necessary, submitted to the Student Navigation Center with your name, student ID and institution on each page (transfer credits). They are not required for admission.
Graduate admissions works differently.
Any degree completed outside the US needs a detailed course-by-course evaluation, even if the transcript is in English, from WES, CED, The Evaluation Company, ECE or NAEG, and because Salem State offers no conditional admission to international graduate applicants, the evaluation must be in before the file is reviewed (international graduate applicants).
The institution sends your records to the agency (graduate transcripts); each agency sets its own translation rule.

Uploading the translation to Salem State
High school records and translations go to Salem State Undergraduate Admissions by mail or electronically from your school to admissions@salemstate.edu; college records go to the evaluation agency first (Submit your transcripts).
eVerbary delivers a signed PDF; we can also email the translation directly to the admissions office on request.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For Salem State that means we translate your records and course descriptions; the course-by-course evaluation of college or graduate records is ordered by you from an approved agency.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions

Which agencies does Salem State approve?
CED, ECE, The Evaluation Company, North American Educational Group and WES (Submit your transcripts).
My degree is in English. Do I need an evaluation for graduate school?
