How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

Old Dominion University evaluates foreign academic records itself and asks that academic documents not in English come with certified official translations by a licensed or professional translator; translations made by the student are refused.

Old Dominion University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

Undergraduates also need course descriptions in English for transfer credit, and translations, like transcripts, must reach the Office of International Admissions as official documents sent directly to it.

Worth knowing about ODU

ODU evaluates in-house

Agency reports serve only as a translation.

Course descriptions

Translated, for transfer credit.

Sent directly

Translations must reach ODU as official documents.

ODU requirements in detail

Translation

Certified official translations must accompany academic documents not written in English; when English is not the language of instruction, transcripts (and, for undergraduates, course descriptions) are needed in English and the native language (Undergraduate international checklist).

Who may translate

A licensed or professional translator; translations by the student are not accepted (undergraduate, graduate).

Evaluation

ODU's Office of International Admissions evaluates all foreign credentials; agency evaluations are not accepted as official, but the report can serve as an English translation (FAQ).

Official delivery

Transcripts, translations and test scores must be official, sealed, stamped and sent directly to the Office of International Admissions (Undergraduate international checklist); photocopies, notarized or faxed copies are not accepted (admission policy).

Transfer credit

Official English translations of course or catalog descriptions are required; ODU awards general education and elective credit, departments award core credit (Undergraduate international checklist).

Graduate programs

Some programs require an agency evaluation in their own application requirements (International student admission policy (PDF)); health sciences programs through GradCAS name WES or ECE (Virginia Health Sciences: international students).

After you apply

No more documents can be uploaded to the online application; send them to intladm@odu.edu with your name and date of birth in the subject line (Undergraduate international checklist).

Agency evaluations: a translation, not an evaluation

ODU's international FAQ says the Office of International Admissions evaluates all foreign credentials in-house, from records sealed, stamped or attested by a school official and sent directly by the institution.

An evaluation from an agency is not accepted as official, though ODU says the report can serve as an English translation.

For most applicants, paying for an evaluation is unnecessary: what ODU needs is the official record and a certified translation by a licensed or professional translator.

The exceptions are programs that set their own rule.

ODU's international admission policy says some programs require official transcripts to be formally translated and evaluated by a credential evaluation service, and the health sciences programs that admit through GradCAS ask for a WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation with GPA; there, the translation goes to the agency, which needs a word-for-word translation.

Course descriptions and transfer credit

Undergraduates with college work abroad receive general education and elective credit from the Office of International Admissions, while core departmental credit is decided by advisors in the academic department.

Both need official English translations of course or catalog descriptions, which ODU says are required as part of the application and speed up the review (checklist, FAQ).

Translating only the courses that appear on your transcript, rather than a whole catalog, keeps the order smaller. We keep course codes and titles as printed, so they can be matched with the transcript.

Where ODU's pages differ

The main international FAQ says agency evaluations are not accepted as official.

ODU's online campus, ODUGlobal, says on its international admissions page that it can use a third-party evaluation if it states it was based on official documents and includes copies of them, suggests NACES members, and asks for a word-for-word translation of transcripts not in English.

We have not resolved this for you; if you apply to an online program, follow the ODUGlobal page and confirm with globalintladm@odu.edu.

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to ODU

  • ODU wants translations, like transcripts, sent directly to the Office of International Admissions as official documents (Undergraduate international checklist). eVerbary can email the certified translation to intladm@odu.edu if you write in the order notes that it is for ODU, or mail it in a sealed, signed envelope: choose the hard copy at checkout with the office's address, 2006 Dragas Hall, Norfolk, VA 23529 ($19.95 Priority or $37.95 Express in the US).

  • Once the online application is submitted, additional credentials go to intladm@odu.edu with your name and date of birth in the subject line (Undergraduate international checklist). Online applicants use globalintladm@odu.edu (ODUGlobal: international admissions).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For ODU that means we translate your records and course descriptions; ODU evaluates them itself, and where a program asks for a WES or ECE evaluation, you order it from the agency.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my documents for ODU?

A licensed or professional translator; ODU does not accept translations made by the student (Undergraduate international checklist). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.

Do I need a WES or ECE evaluation for ODU?

Generally no: ODU evaluates foreign credentials itself and does not accept agency evaluations as official (International admissions FAQ). Some programs, such as health sciences programs through GradCAS, ask for one (Virginia Health Sciences: international students).

Do I need to translate course descriptions?

Undergraduates do: ODU asks for official English translations of course or catalog descriptions for transfer credit (Undergraduate international checklist).

Can I send notarized copies?

No. ODU's policy says photocopies, notarized copies and faxed copies of required official documents are not accepted (International student admission policy (PDF)).

How does the translation reach ODU?

As an official document sent directly to the Office of International Admissions (Undergraduate international checklist). eVerbary can email it to intladm@odu.edu or mail it in a sealed, signed envelope on request.

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
