Illinois Institute of Technology: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Illinois Tech asks international applicants for the official transcript in its original language together with a certified English translation, and its graduate catalog asks for a professional English translation and recommends an ATA translator. Illinois Institute of Technology accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Graduate Admission estimates your U.S. GPA from the uploaded records itself, while transfer students need a NACES course-by-course evaluation to receive credit, which we do not provide.

Illinois Tech requirements at a glance

Illinois Institute of Technology: requirements for documents in another language
What Illinois Tech asks for
TranslationUndergraduate: the official native-language transcript with a certified English translation (first-year, catalog). Graduate: the original and a professional English translation (graduate catalog).
Who may translateNot stated on the undergraduate pages; the graduate catalog recommends an American Translators Association translator (source).
Undergraduate transcriptsOfficial or certified copies, covering the last three full years, sent through the Common App by a school official or emailed from the school's domain (source).
Graduate uploadsPDF only: scans of official paper transcripts, mark sheets or registrar e-transcripts, plus the degree certificate if completed (source).
EvaluationGraduate: Illinois Tech determines degree equivalency and an estimated GPA itself (source); a NACES evaluation only if it cannot interpret your records (source). Transfer: NACES course-by-course for credit (source).
Translation listThe first-year page links a full list of translation requirements on a SharePoint file that asks for a sign-in; we could not read it.
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. Illinois Tech's undergraduate pages ask for "a certified translated English version" without restricting who makes it (first-year page), and the graduate catalog asks for "a professional English translation" (graduate catalog); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Undergraduates: two documents, one envelope of evidence

Illinois Tech wants international first-year applicants to send official or certified copies of their marks for the last three full years, plus board examination results, and, where the school does not issue English transcripts, the native-language transcript together with a certified English translation (source). The undergraduate catalog repeats it for all international applicants: transcripts in the native language and certified translations of all of them (catalog).

Transcripts reach the university through the Common Application from a school official, or by email to the admission office from the school's own email domain. Channel Partner and Iranian applicants use a separate Illinois Tech application (source). Supporting documents can be emailed or mailed to the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

Transfer credit runs through NACES

International transfer students send official transcripts directly from each institution, with the same certified translation, and may upload an unofficial copy to the Application Tracker after applying (source). For credit, Illinois Tech asks for an official course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, naming ECE and Educational Perspectives as examples; the page calls it a "NACES accredited translation", but it describes an evaluation. Course descriptions for every course taken outside the U.S. go into a single PDF on the Application Tracker, and admitted students email the descriptions and the evaluation so transfer credit can be set (admitted students).

Evaluation agencies set their own translation rules; see translation for credential evaluation. Course descriptions are translated like any other page.

Graduate admission does its own conversion

Illinois Tech's Office of Graduate Admission reviews every uploaded credential to work out the U.S. degree equivalency and an estimated GPA (source). The graduate catalog asks for a professional English translation next to any transcript not issued in English, recommends an ATA translator, and requires a NACES evaluation only when the office cannot evaluate and interpret the records (source).

Everything goes in as PDF: scans of the official paper transcript or individual mark sheets, or the e-transcript from the registrar, and the degree or provisional certificate if the degree is complete; web printouts of the academic record are refused (source). Degree verification, with the original documents or copies and their English translations, must be complete before Illinois Tech confers your graduate degree (source).

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to Illinois Tech

First-year applicants have the school send transcripts and translations through the Common Application, or by email from the school's domain (source); transfer applicants upload unofficial copies to the Application Tracker while institutions send the officials (source).

Graduate applicants upload the scanned original and the translation as PDFs in the online application (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Illinois Tech that means we cover the translation of your records and course descriptions; the NACES course-by-course evaluation transfer students need for credit comes from an evaluation agency.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my transcripts for Illinois Tech?

The undergraduate pages ask for a certified English translation without naming who makes it (source); the graduate catalog asks for a professional translation and recommends an ATA translator (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary fits both.

Do I need WES for graduate admission at Illinois Tech?

Usually not. Graduate Admission evaluates your records itself and asks for a NACES evaluation only if it cannot interpret them (source).

How do I get transfer credit for courses taken abroad?

Send a NACES course-by-course evaluation, such as ECE or Educational Perspectives, and course descriptions in one PDF (source).

Do I still send the original-language transcript?

Yes. Illinois Tech asks for the native-language transcript along with the English translation (first-year, graduate).

In what format do I upload graduate documents?

PDF only (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
