How we know · policy checked on October 27, 2026

Hostos asks applicants educated abroad for a complete, literal English translation of each record, in the same format as the original, typed on letterhead and signed by the translator, and it accepts translations from a translation agency, a consulate, an immigrant association, your school or a US faculty member, but not from you or your family.

Hostos Community College (CUNY) accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

Records are then evaluated by CUNY or an approved evaluation service, which we do not provide; F-1 applicants also need an official translation of a foreign bank letter.

Hostos requirements in detail

Translation

An English translation plus the document in the original language; complete and literal, same format, on business or school letterhead, signed by a translator who knows the language (Document Translation Guidelines).

Who may translate

Consulate or embassy of the issuing country, a translation agency, an immigrant or refugee association, the school you attended, or a US faculty member who states institution, department and rank (Document Translation Guidelines).

Not accepted

Translations by the student, family members or anyone not affiliated with those organizations; CUNY may decide whether a translation is accepted (Document Translation Guidelines).

Evaluation

Students educated abroad choose a CUNY-approved evaluation service or CUNY's University Application Processing Center (Students educated abroad).

Records

A copy of the complete secondary record, all years, with national or government certificates; an official transcript from each university attended (Students educated abroad).

F-1 bank letter

A sponsor abroad sends the original bank letter with an official translation and dollar conversion (International student admissions process).

Hostos publishes the translation rule itself

Many CUNY colleges simply point to the central office; Hostos reproduces CUNY's Document Translation Guidelines on its own admissions site (Document Translation Guidelines).

The format rules matter as much as who translates: the translation must be complete and word-for-word with no attempt to interpret or evaluate the credential, laid out like the original, typed on business or school letterhead and signed by a translator who attests to knowing the language. Send it with the original-language document, never instead of it.

Students educated abroad send a copy of their complete secondary record, all years, plus any national or government certificates, and an official transcript from each university attended; all translations must comply with the guidelines (Students educated abroad).

The evaluation is done by CUNY's processing center or an approved service; see the CUNY page for those options.

F-1 students: the bank letter needs a translation too

An I-20 is issued only after you have been fully processed and accepted through CUNY's processing center (International student admissions process).

Students who have never been to the US submit a bank letter showing $15,213.40 to $32,401.40, and if the sponsor lives outside the US the original bank letter must come with an official translation and a dollar conversion, plus an Affidavit of Support.

F-1 transfers bring their passport, I-94, previous I-20s and the same financial documents to the International Student Office.

We translate the bank letter as it is, figures and currency included; the dollar conversion Hostos asks for is a separate figure you or the bank add, not part of a certified translation.

Need a certified translation for Hostos?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • Secondary school transcripts, all years, and the diploma
  • National or government exam certificates
  • University transcripts and degree certificates
  • Sponsor's bank letter, for the I-20

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to Hostos

  • Academic records and their translations go with your CUNY application, together with the originals, for the evaluation chosen (Students educated abroad). If you use an approved evaluation service, the translation goes to that service with your records.

  • The bank letter and its translation go to the International Student Advisor in the Office of Admissions and Recruitment, Building B, Room 102 (International student admissions process).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For Hostos that means we translate your records and bank letter; the CUNY or agency evaluation and the dollar conversion are not part of our service.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a translation agency translate my documents for Hostos?

Yes. A translation agency is one of the providers Hostos lists for official translations (Document Translation Guidelines).

Can I translate my own diploma for Hostos?

No. Translations by the student or family members are not accepted (Document Translation Guidelines).

Does the translation need to look like the original?

Yes: complete and literal, in the same format as the original, typed on letterhead and signed by the translator (Document Translation Guidelines).

Who evaluates my foreign records?

CUNY's University Application Processing Center or one of the approved evaluation services listed by CUNY; you choose (Students educated abroad).

Does my sponsor's bank letter need a translation?

Yes, if the sponsor is abroad: the original bank letter with an official translation and dollar conversion (International student admissions process).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
