How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026

College of the Canyons does not ask for translations or evaluations to admit F-1 students unless an academic counselor recommends them so foreign courses can count toward graduation; credit for coursework from outside the US then needs a NACES course-by-course evaluation, delivered unopened to Admissions and Records.

College of the Canyons' evaluation agencies, such as WES, ECE and IERF, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

You translate first and send the translation to the agency with your records; the agency writes the evaluation, which we do not provide.

College of the Canyons requirements in detail

Translation for admission

Not required: ISP lists transcript translations and evaluations as needed only when an academic counselor recommends them for using foreign courses toward graduation (International Services & Programs: apply).

Who may translate

Set by the NACES evaluation agency; WES, ECE and IERF accept a translation from a professional service (see below).

Evaluation

For international transcripts: a NACES course-by-course report with grades, units and upper or lower division for each course (Admissions & Records: transcript evaluation).

Delivery

Do not open the evaluated transcript; bring it to Admissions and Records in Canyons Hall, Valencia campus (Admissions & Records: transcript evaluation).

Proof of secondary education

A graduation certificate, diploma or transcript, or a principal's letter if you will finish before classes start (International Services & Programs: apply).

Where to apply

Email the application and documents to isp@canyons.edu or bring them to the ISP office; international students consult ISP on credit accepted (International Services & Programs: apply, catalog).

Deadlines (fall)

Rapid approval May 1, standard June 1, special July 4 (International Services & Programs: apply).

When College of the Canyons needs a translation at all

For an F-1 application, College of the Canyons asks for proof that you completed secondary education, which can be a graduation certificate, a diploma or a transcript, and its document list says transcript translations and evaluations are not required unless an academic counselor recommends them, so foreign courses can be used for graduation requirements.

Online-only students abroad send the application, passport, proof of secondary education and English proficiency.

The translation becomes necessary when you want credit.

Admissions & Records reads international transcripts only through a NACES member's course-by-course report that lists grades, units and upper or lower division for each course; you bring it unopened to Canyons Hall (transcript evaluation).

Foreign coursework never satisfies English or Communication courses, even from an English-language school, and units from other institutions are generally posted only after 12 units at College of the Canyons.

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

College of the Canyons points to the NACES member list and names no agency.

WES wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator, such as a certified translation agency, does not accept translations made by applicants, and does not translate documents itself.

ECE asks for complete, literal, word-for-word translations, lets applicants translate their own documents, and sells an $85 Translation Waiver under which it translates internally for the report without delivering a translation.

IERF asks for typed, line-by-line translations in the same format as the original and reserves the right to require a professional one.

Uploading the translation to College of the Canyons

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For College of the Canyons that means we translate your records for the agency; the NACES course-by-course evaluation is ordered by you after the translation.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to translate my high school diploma to apply to College of the Canyons?

Not for the F-1 application: ISP says translations and evaluations are not required unless a counselor recommends them (International Services & Programs: apply).

How do I get credit for courses I took abroad?

Through a NACES course-by-course evaluation with grades, units and division for each course, brought unopened to Admissions and Records (Admissions & Records: transcript evaluation).

Which agency should I use?

Any NACES member (Admissions & Records: transcript evaluation); WES, ECE and IERF accept professional translations, with different rules on self-translation (WES, ECE).

Can foreign courses count for English composition?

No, even if your school taught in English (Admissions & Records: transcript evaluation).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
