How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026
The Washington State Bar Association says all documents filed with an admission application must be in English or accompanied by a certified English translation; for foreign-educated lawyers that usually means certificates of good standing and law degree records.
WSBA accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary, since its policy does not restrict who translates.
Everything is filed electronically in the admissions portal, and foreign lawyers' applications go through an NCBE investigation that can take up to nine months; we translate, but certificates must be issued by your admitting authority.
WSBA at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
The WSBA Admissions Policies say all documents must be in English or accompanied by a certified English translation (Admissions Policies), without naming who must translate, so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Policy checked on October 21, 2026.

WSBA requirements in detail
Translation
All documents must be in English or accompanied by a certified English translation (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026).
Who may translate
Not specified; the policy asks for a certified translation without naming a translator or credential (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026).
Certificates of good standing
Attorney applicants file a certificate of good standing, or similar document, issued by the admitting authority of every jurisdiction where they were ever admitted, signed and dated within six months (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026).
How to submit
Electronically, within the filing deadlines, through the admissions portal (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026).
Evaluation
No credential evaluation agency is named. Applications from foreign lawyers are investigated by a third party (NCBE), which charges its own fee (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026, FAQ).
Fee
Bar exam application $595 for general applicants or $645 for attorney applicants, plus the NCBE exam fee (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026).
Two ways in for foreign-educated lawyers
WSBA lets you sit the bar exam with a law degree from outside the US that qualifies you to practice law there, plus an LL.M. that meets Washington Supreme Court APR 3 from an ABA-approved school; or if you are admitted in a jurisdiction whose law is based on English common law and have practiced in at least three of the last five years (Qualifications to take the bar exam).
A foreign degree that does not qualify you to practice abroad is not enough, even with a US LL.M. (Admissions FAQ).
The exam is the NextGen UBE, given in February and July (Lawyers: join the legal profession in Washington). Applicants who qualify for admission by motion or UBE score transfer cannot take it instead.
Plan around the investigation
Foreign lawyers' applications are sent to NCBE for investigation, which typically takes four to six months for US lawyers and up to nine months for foreign lawyer applicants (Admissions FAQ).
Good standing certificates must be dated within six months of the application, as must the two certificates of good moral character and the notarized authorization and release (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026), so request them close to filing and order translations as soon as they arrive.
WSBA's old page for international applicants now redirects to the general lawyers page, and the portal publishes no separate checklist for the foreign transcript or diploma (Qualifications to take the bar exam). The certified translation rule applies to whatever the portal asks you to upload.

What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
- Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.
Submitting the translation to WSBA
Upload each document with its certified English translation in the WSBA admissions portal, within the filing deadlines (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026).
Our translation is delivered as a PDF with a signed certificate of translation accuracy, ready to upload.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.
For WSBA that means we translate; your certificates of good standing must be issued by your admitting authority, and the NCBE investigation is between you, NCBE and WSBA.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my documents for the Washington bar?
WSBA asks for a certified English translation and does not say who must make it (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026). A certified translation from a professional service meets that.
Can I sit the Washington bar exam with a foreign law degree?
Yes, if the degree qualifies you to practice where it was earned and you add an APR 3 LL.M. from an ABA-approved school, or if you are admitted in an English common-law jurisdiction and have practiced three of the last five years (Qualifications to take the bar exam).
How recent must my certificate of good standing be?
Signed and dated within six months before the application date (WSBA Admissions Policies, revised September 24, 2026).
Do I need a credential evaluation from WES or ECE?
WSBA does not name one; foreign lawyers' applications are verified through an NCBE investigation (Admissions FAQ).
How long does it take?
The NCBE investigation can take up to nine months for foreign lawyer applicants (Admissions FAQ).
