How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026
The State Medical Board of Ohio publishes no translation rule for physician applicants: foreign medical graduates need a valid ECFMG certificate, two years of graduate medical education and, on the standard route, an FCVS profile sent to the board.
ECFMG, whose certification Ohio relies on, accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary, and bars applicants from translating their own documents.
We translate your diploma and other records for ECFMG; we do not issue the certificate, build the FCVS profile or take the spoken English test for you.
Ohio Medical Board at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
Ohio requires foreign graduates to "hold a valid ECFMG certificate" (physician licensure page), and ECFMG accepts a translation prepared by "a professional translation service" (ECFMG translation rules), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets the rule that applies. Worth knowing about Ohio Medical Board

Required of foreign graduates, plus ECFMG.
Spoken English proof
TOEFL iBT 26/26/90 or another listed route.
Ohio Medical Board requirements in detail
Translation
No rule on the board's physician page (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure). The rule that applies is ECFMG's: documents not in English need an English translation that meets its requirements, uploaded with the original (ECFMG).
Who may translate
For ECFMG: a professional translation service, a medical school official or a government official; not the applicant (ECFMG: English translations).
Foreign graduates
Two years of GME through the second-year level, or a Fifth Pathway plus one year, and a valid ECFMG certificate unless Fifth Pathway (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure).
Credentials verification
Standard route: complete an FCVS application and designate the Ohio board to receive your profile; do this before the rest of the application (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure).
Spoken English
Graduates of other schools prove it by ECFMG's Clinical Skills Assessment on or after 7/1/98, US undergraduate study, TOEFL iBT (26 speaking, 26 listening, 90 total) or a Fifth Pathway (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure).
Expedited route
Licensure by endorsement for experienced physicians does not need an FCVS packet; the board obtains the reports (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure).
Why the translation happens at ECFMG, not in Ohio
Ohio verifies identity, education and training through FCVS, which gathers them from primary sources, and treats an ECFMG certificate as evidence of the required preliminary education (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure).
The board does not ask you to submit translated school records itself.
The point where you supply a translation is ECFMG: it wants the original-language document and a word-for-word translation uploaded together (ECFMG Information Booklet: English translation).
ECFMG's translation must be signed, on letterhead that identifies a private company as a translation service, with a statement in English that it is correct, and made from the original or a photocopy rather than a transcription (ECFMG: English translations).
The spoken English requirement is separate
Ohio adds a spoken English requirement that a translation does not touch. The board notes that the old TOEFL, TWE and ECFMG English test taken before 7/1/98 measure comprehension, not spoken proficiency, and do not satisfy it (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure).

What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
- Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.
Submitting the translation to Ohio Medical Board
For ECFMG, upload the PDF of the certified translation together with the original-language document through ECFMG's online services (ECFMG: English translations).
Ohio receives your credentials through the FCVS profile you designate to the board (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure); follow FCVS's own instructions for any document it asks you to provide.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.
For Ohio that means we translate your documents; ECFMG certification, the FCVS profile, background checks and the TOEFL are separate steps you arrange.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Ohio medical board require certified translations?
Its physician licensure page publishes no translation rule. Foreign graduates need ECFMG certification (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure), and ECFMG requires a translation from a professional translation service or an official (ECFMG: English translations).
Do I need FCVS for an Ohio license?
On the standard route, yes: all physicians designate the board to receive their FCVS profile. The expedited endorsement route does not need an FCVS packet (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure).
Can I translate my own documents for ECFMG?
No. ECFMG does not allow applicants to translate their own documents (ECFMG: English translations).
How many years of residency do foreign graduates need in Ohio?
Two years of graduate medical education through the second-year level, or a Fifth Pathway plus one year (Physician (MD, DO, DPM) licensure).
