How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026
The New Mexico Public Education Department requires a course-by-course evaluation with US equivalency for every foreign transcript and says a translation alone is not acceptable for transcripts, though translations are enough for other documents in another language.
WES, one of the companies NMPED lists, accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary as the basis of its evaluation.
We translate your transcripts for the evaluator and your other documents for NMPED; The Evaluation Company and Global Credential Evaluators, also listed, take only ATA-certified translators, whom we assign on request.
NMPED at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
NMPED requires a course-by-course evaluation of foreign transcripts and lists WES among the companies whose reports it retrieves (foreign credentialing agencies); WES accepts a translation by a professional translator or certified translation agency (WES translation rules), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets the evaluation agency's rule. Worth knowing about NMPED
Translation alone refused
Foreign transcripts need an evaluation, not just English.
NACES not required
NMPED neither requires nor recommends NACES members.
Sealed or downloaded
Mailed sealed, or retrieved from listed companies.
NMPED requirements in detail
Translation
A translation alone is not acceptable for a foreign transcript; translations are sufficient only for other documents in another language (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
Who may translate
Evaluation
A course-by-course evaluation, including US equivalency, for all foreign transcripts (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
Which agency
NMPED links the NACES list but neither requires nor recommends NACES members; it names companies such as WES, ECE, IERF, IEE, One Earth, Atlas, The Evaluation Company and Global Credential Evaluators (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
How it arrives
Sealed and mailed to 300 Don Gaspar, Santa Fe, NM 87501 if the company has no download service; listed companies can deliver by dashboard or email if you request that service when you apply (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
Other transcripts
Official US transcripts can be scanned and emailed, or sent by eScrip, to OfficialTranscripts.LU@ped.nm.gov (FAQ).
Why a translation is not enough for transcripts
NMPED is explicit: for foreign transcripts, translations are not acceptable, and every transcript needs a course-by-course evaluation with US equivalency (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
The same sentence says translations are sufficient for documents in other languages that are not transcripts.
In practice the transcript goes to an evaluator with its translation, and documents such as a foreign teaching license or a name-change record can go to NMPED with a translation alone.
NMPED does not say who must make those other translations. A certified translation from a professional service, with a signed statement of accuracy, meets any of the usual readings of that rule; ask the Licensure Bureau if you are unsure.
Choosing a company, and ordering the download
NMPED lists the companies whose reports it can retrieve by dashboard or email, with their turnaround times, and says you must request that delivery when you order the evaluation (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
WES does not translate and wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator (WES). ECE accepts a literal translation by anyone (ECE); IEE refuses translations by the client or a notary (IEE).
The Evaluation Company accepts outside translators only if ATA-certified, and Global Credential Evaluators accepts the issuing university, the Ministry of Education or an ATA-certified translator (TEC, GCE). If you pick either, see the ATA section below.
Where NMPED's pages differ
The licensure FAQ says NMPED only accepts mailed foreign transcript evaluations (Licensure frequently asked questions); the foreign credentialing agencies page says it retrieves downloads from the listed companies when you request it (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
The agencies page is the more detailed one. If your company is not on its list, have the evaluation mailed sealed to 300 Don Gaspar.
Need a certified translation for NMPED?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- University transcripts and mark sheets, for the evaluation
- Diploma or degree certificate
- Teaching license from the other country
- Marriage certificate or other name-change record
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
- Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.
Submitting the translation to NMPED
For transcripts, the translation goes to the evaluation company with your records, under its instructions; the company sends the evaluation to NMPED by download or sealed mail (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
Other documents in another language go to NMPED with their translation, which NMPED accepts for non-transcript documents (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
If you need a translator certified by ATA
Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:
$34.95 per page
Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian
$44.95 per page
Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian
To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for NMPED, what it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).
We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.
For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.
For NMPED that means we translate your transcripts for the evaluator and your other documents for NMPED; the course-by-course evaluation itself comes from the company.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I send NMPED a translated transcript instead of an evaluation?
No. NMPED does not accept translations for foreign transcripts; they need a course-by-course evaluation (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
Which documents can go with a translation alone?
Documents in other languages that are not transcripts, such as a license or certificate (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
Must I use a NACES member?
No. NMPED neither requires nor recommends NACES members, and lists companies it can retrieve reports from (Foreign credentialing agencies, Licensure).
Who may translate my transcript for the evaluator?
The evaluator decides. WES wants a professional translator (WES: translation requirements), which eVerbary provides.
Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator?
Yes, on request, for The Evaluation Company or Global Credential Evaluators. Ask for a free quote and write in the notes which company the translation is for and that it needs a translator individually certified by ATA.
