How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

The New Jersey Department of Education says it is not authorized to judge studies completed in other countries, so applicants must first obtain a foreign transcript evaluation from an agency recognized by NACES or AICE, asking for a bachelor's equivalency, semester hours per area, a course-by-course listing and, for teachers, the cumulative GPA; it publishes no translation rule of its own.

WES, a NACES member, accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. We translate your transcripts and diploma for the agency; the evaluation and the certification review are not ours.

NJDOE at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

NJDOE requires a foreign transcript evaluation from an agency recognized by NACES or AICE (certification FAQ); WES is a NACES member (NACES members) and accepts a translation by a professional translator or certified translation agency (WES translation rules), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets the evaluation agency's rule. NJDOE requirements in detail

Translation

NJDOE publishes no translation rule; your documents are translated for the evaluation agency, under that agency's rule (Certification FAQs).

Who may translate

Set by the agency. WES asks for a professional translator and refuses applicant translations (WES); ECE accepts any literal, word-for-word translation (ECE); Educational Perspectives accepts a reputable agency or certified translator (EP).

Evaluation

Required before review: the equivalent of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four-year program, the semester-hour equivalent of each area of study, a course-by-course listing, and the cumulative GPA for teacher applicants (Certification FAQs).

Which agency

One recognized by NACES or AICE; agencies outside both may be accepted after NJDOE reviews the evaluation they produce (Certification FAQs).

Cost

Agencies charge their own fees (Certification FAQs).

How to submit

Apply and upload required documents in the New Jersey Educator Certification (NJEdCert) system; official transcripts take about 10 to 15 business days to process after receipt (apply).

What to ask the agency for

NJDOE lists exactly what the evaluation should state: the equivalent of studies to a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four-year program, the semester-hour equivalent of each area of college-level study, and, for teacher certification, the cumulative baccalaureate GPA; it tells you to request the two-part evaluation that includes a course-by-course listing (Certification FAQs).

A document-by-document report without semester hours per subject leaves the Office unable to count the credits a New Jersey endorsement requires.

The semester hours come from your transcript, so the agency needs every year of it, with the grading scale. We translate grades, hours and subject names exactly as recorded; the conversion is the agency's work.

Choosing a NACES or AICE member

New Jersey names no agency; it points to the NACES and AICE member lists and reviews others case by case (Certification FAQs). WES does not translate and wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator (WES).

ECE accepts a literal translation by anyone or translates for its report for a fee (ECE). Educational Perspectives accepts a reputable translation agency or a certified professional translator (EP).

Choosing a NACES or AICE member avoids the extra review a non-member evaluation may face.

Need a certified translation for NJDOE?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • University transcripts and mark sheets for all years
  • Diploma or degree certificate
  • Student teaching or practicum records
  • Teaching certificate or license from the other country

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
  • Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.

Submitting the translation to NJDOE

  • The translation goes to the evaluation agency with your records, under that agency's instructions (WES, for example, takes uploads in your WES account) (Certification FAQs).

  • Your certification application and required documents go through NJEdCert (Apply for certification, NJEdCert).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.

For NJDOE that means we translate your records for the evaluation agency; the two-part evaluation, its GPA and the certification review are outside what we do.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does New Jersey require a translation of my foreign transcripts?

NJDOE requires a foreign transcript evaluation first (Certification FAQs); the agency needs your records in English under its own rule. WES, for example, wants a professional translator (WES: translation requirements).

Which evaluation agencies does New Jersey accept?

Agencies recognized by NACES or AICE; others may be accepted after review of their evaluation (Certification FAQs).

What should the evaluation include?

Bachelor's equivalency, semester hours per area, a course-by-course listing and the cumulative GPA for teachers (Certification FAQs).

Where do I submit my application?

In the NJEdCert system, where you also upload required documents (Apply for certification, NJEdCert).

Can I translate my own documents?

Not for WES, which refuses applicant translations (WES: translation requirements). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets its rule.
