How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

The Kansas State Department of Education asks teachers who completed their preparation outside the United States for an official evaluation of their foreign education credentials from a NACES member, plus an English proficiency test when English is not their primary language and a content test.

NACES members such as WES and ECE accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary, so the translation goes to the agency with your records before it evaluates them.

We translate the transcripts and diplomas; the evaluation, the tests and the license decision are outside what we do.

KSDE at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

KSDE requires an official evaluation from a credential evaluator that is a NACES member (out-of-country applications), and WES, a NACES member, accepts a translation from a professional translation service (WES translation rules); ECE accepts any complete word-for-word translation (ECE).

A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets both. Policy checked on October 21, 2026.

Worth knowing about KSDE

NACES only

KSDE names NACES; it does not mention AICE.

English test

Required when English is not your primary language.

Initial license

Out-of-country applicants start with an initial Kansas license.

KSDE requirements in detail

Translation

KSDE publishes no translator rule of its own; the evaluation agency reads your records and applies its rule.

Who may translate

Set by the agency: WES wants a professional translator, not the applicant (WES); ECE accepts a word-for-word translation by anyone (ECE).

Evaluation

An official evaluation of your foreign education credentials from a credential evaluator approved by the Kansas State Board of Education, which must be a NACES member (License information and application: out-of-country applications).

English proficiency

If English is not your primary language, passing scores on an English proficiency test approved by the State Board; KSDE links TOEFL (License information and application: out-of-country applications).

Content test

How to apply

Through KLAS, under License Applications, with fingerprints and a background check (License information and application: out-of-country applications).

Three requirements, and only one needs a translation

KSDE lists three conditions for an initial license after a teacher education program outside the United States: a NACES-member evaluation of your foreign credentials, an English proficiency test if English is not your primary language, and the content assessment for your area (License information and application: out-of-country applications).

Of the three, only the evaluation is built from your foreign documents, so that is where the translation matters: the agency must read your transcripts and diploma.

Because the evaluation is the only document that turns your foreign program into something KSDE can match with a Kansas endorsement, every course and the practice teaching on your transcript should be translated, not summarized.

What each agency asks for the translation

WES asks for an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator and does not accept one made by the applicant (WES).

ECE accepts a complete, literal translation from anyone, including you, or translates for its report under an $85 waiver (ECE). Other NACES members publish their own rules; some accept only ATA-certified translators.

Need a certified translation for KSDE?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • University transcripts and mark sheets from your teacher education program
  • Degree certificates and diplomas
  • Records of student teaching or practicum
  • Your teaching license or certificate from another country, if the agency asks for it

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
  • Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.

Submitting the translation to KSDE

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.

For KSDE that means we translate your records; the evaluation comes from a NACES member, and the English and content tests are yours to take.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does KSDE need a translation of my transcripts?

KSDE requires an official evaluation from a NACES member (License information and application: out-of-country applications); the agency needs your records in English under its own rule. WES, for example, wants a professional translator (WES: translation requirements).

Can I use an AICE member for Kansas?

KSDE's page names only NACES: you will need to use a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (License information and application: out-of-country applications).

Do I need TOEFL?

Only if English is not your primary language: KSDE asks for passing scores on an English proficiency test approved by the State Board and links TOEFL (License information and application: out-of-country applications).

Which license do out-of-country teachers get first?

An initial Kansas teaching license, once the evaluation, English and content test requirements are met (License information and application: out-of-country applications).
