How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026
The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners publishes no translation rule for physician applicants: it verifies your medical school directly with the school and requires international medical graduates to hold ECFMG certification.
Through ECFMG, which accepts word-for-word translations from a professional translation service and never your own, a certified translation from eVerbary covers the foreign-language documents you upload for certification.
Copies of diplomas do not replace Alabama's own verification, which your medical school emails to the Board; we do not request it for you.
Alabama BME at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
Alabama requires ECFMG certification of graduates of non-accredited schools (full license), and ECFMG accepts a word-for-word translation prepared by a professional translation service (ECFMG translation requirements), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Alabama BME requirements in detail
Translation
The Board's full-license page, checklist and FAQ publish no translation rule; foreign-language credentials go through ECFMG certification, which has its own rule.
Who may translate
For documents uploaded to ECFMG: a government official, a medical school official or a professional translation service; applicants may not translate their own (ECFMG).
ECFMG
Graduates of non-accredited schools must be ECFMG-certified (or complete a Fifth Pathway) and attended a school listed in the WHO or IMED directory; IMGs request an ECFMG status report sent to Alabama through ECFMG (Full license: MD/DO, checklist).
Medical school verification
Appendix A, completed by the school and emailed from the university to credentialing@albme.gov; copies of diplomas are not accepted as verification (Checklist for full MD/DO initial license application, form).
Training
Two years of postgraduate training for graduates of non-accredited schools, verified by the program on Appendix B (Full license: MD/DO).
FCVS
Accepted but not required; if used, it should cover Appendix A, Appendix B, scores and ECFMG (Checklist for full MD/DO initial license application).
English
No separate English test; ECFMG certification includes an English proficiency assessment (FAQ).
Primary source, not translated copies
Alabama builds its file from primary sources: your medical school completes Appendix A and emails it from the university to the Board, postgraduate programs do the same with Appendix B, and copies of diplomas or certificates are not accepted as verification (Checklist for full MD/DO initial license application).
That is why the Board has no translation rule for applicants: the documents that prove your education do not come from you.
What you translate is what ECFMG asks for during certification. ECFMG wants a word-for-word translation, prepared from the document itself, on letterhead, signed and with a certification statement (ECFMG: English translations).
Once ECFMG certifies you, Alabama receives the status report directly from ECFMG.
Schools Alabama treats differently
The Board lists schools it does not approve, including UTESA and UNIREMHOS in the Dominican Republic and St. Christopher's College in Senegal, and schools that require additional documentation, such as CETEC, UFHEC and Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez (Full license: MD/DO).
If your school is on the second list, ask the Board what it needs before you order translations; extra records in Spanish or another language would then need a translation too.
Since July 1, 2025, graduates of Canadian medical schools are also treated as international medical graduates for ECFMG purposes (Full license: MD/DO).
Need a certified translation for Alabama BME?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Medical school diploma, for ECFMG certification
- Medical school transcripts uploaded to ECFMG

- Identity documents for the Declaration of Citizenship, if not in English
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
- Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.
Submitting the translation to Alabama BME
Upload the translation with the original-language document to ECFMG through MyIntealth (ECFMG); ECFMG then reports your certification status to Alabama at your request (Checklist for full MD/DO initial license application).
The Alabama application itself goes through the FSMB Uniform Application and the Board's Licensee Gateway, where you track missing items (Full license: MD/DO).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.
For Alabama that means we translate your documents for ECFMG; Appendix A and B verifications come from your school and programs, and the ECFMG status report from ECFMG.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.

Does the Alabama Board accept a translated copy of my diploma?
Not as verification. The Board requires Appendix A emailed by your university and does not accept diploma copies (Checklist for full MD/DO initial license application).

Do I need FCVS for Alabama?
No. FCVS is accepted but not required (Checklist for full MD/DO initial license application).
Is there an English test?
No; ECFMG certification includes an English proficiency assessment (Full license: MD/DO).
