Arabic for non-native speakers, at Damascus
Syria certified Arabic for non-native speakers principally through the Arabic Teaching Institute at the University of Damascus, which was for decades one of the main destinations for foreign learners of Arabic.
Certificates from before 2011 in particular appear in US academic and professional files. We name the institute and the level as stated.
Which Arabic it attests
A Syrian certificate may attest Modern Standard Arabic or Levantine colloquial — Syrian Arabic is one of the most widely understood spoken varieties across the region — and those are different competences.
A US reader given "Arabic" cannot tell which. We name the variety the certificate states.
Verification, after 2011
Verifying a Syrian academic credential has become difficult, with institutions damaged, records dispersed and some documents reissued or reconstructed.
We translate the document as issued and name the institution exactly, without asserting anything about verifiability, which is for the receiving office to determine.
Arabic, and the four-part name
Certificates are in Arabic and may be bilingual with English. Eastern Arabic numerals are given in Western digits and Hijri dates converted individually.
Syrian names run given name, father, grandfather and family name, so a shortened form on one document is not a different person. See our Arabic page.
Ordering, and what the certification covers
Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
