Degree certificates in English, Afrikaans or Latin
South African degree certificates state the degree, the date it was conferred and any distinction. Many universities write degree names in their Latin form — Baccalaureus Commercii, Magister Artium — and we keep that form with the English meaning. A certificate wholly in English needs no translation.
Universities that taught in Afrikaans issued certificates in Afrikaans or bilingually for decades, and many South Africans in the US hold one. Those are translated in full, including the seals and signatures. See our Afrikaans page.
What an evaluator needs
Evaluators almost always want the academic record as well as the certificate, because the certificate does not list modules or marks. See our transcript page.
SAQA verifies South African qualifications, and DIRCO apostilles a degree only after that verification; some countries require it. US universities and USCIS generally rely on an evaluator rather than an apostille. See our credential evaluation page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Does my degree certificate need translating?
Not if it is entirely in English. An Afrikaans or bilingual certificate does, and so does a Latin certificate if the office wants every word in English.
My certificate says cum laude.
That is a degree with distinction. We keep the Latin phrase and give its meaning.
Do US universities need the SAQA verification?
Generally not, but requirements vary. Ask the receiving institution.
Is acceptance by universities, colleges and schools guaranteed?
Yes. Our certified translations are guaranteed to be accepted by universities, colleges and schools in the United States — and by USCIS, the NVC, courts, government agencies and employers — or your money back. The guarantee covers the translation itself, not the original document or the admission decision, and it covers credential evaluation agencies such as WES and ECE as well. Full terms are in our refund policy.
