Academic records in English, and in Afrikaans

South African universities issue an academic record listing modules, marks as percentages, credits and any distinctions. Records issued today are almost always in English, and an English record needs no translation for a US university or evaluator. See our credential evaluation page.

Older records from universities that taught in Afrikaans — Stellenbosch, Pretoria, the Free State and Potchefstroom among them — and from Afrikaans-medium technikons and colleges may be in Afrikaans or bilingual. Those are translated in full, module names included, and marks are kept as percentages. See our Afrikaans page.

Percentages, distinctions and verification

South African marks are percentages, with 50 usually a pass and 75 a distinction; we reproduce them and translate any key, but do not convert them into US grades, which is the evaluator's job. Degrees awarded cum laude are shown as written.

For use abroad, SAQA verifies South African degrees before DIRCO will apostille them. US universities usually verify through an evaluator instead. School results are covered on our matric page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

My academic record is in English.

Then it needs no translation, unless a stamp or note is in Afrikaans.

My university taught in Afrikaans.

Your record may be in Afrikaans or bilingual. We translate it in full, and the evaluator reads the translation.

Can you convert my marks into a GPA?

No. A certified translation reproduces what the document says. Conversion is done by a credential evaluator such as WES.

Is acceptance by universities, colleges and schools guaranteed?

Yes. Our certified translations are guaranteed to be accepted by universities, colleges and schools in the United States — and by USCIS, the NVC, courts, government agencies and employers — or your money back. The guarantee covers the translation itself, not the original document or the admission decision, and it covers credential evaluation agencies such as WES and ECE as well. Full terms are in our refund policy.
